Just what do professional footballers do when they hang up their boots?Popular moves include going into coaching or management, with the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino proving to be successes both on the pitch and in the dugout.Others, like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, become pundits, delivering their opinions on the beautiful game from the comfort of a television studio. And becoming owners of a football club is becoming common these days.Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and David Beckham, all of Manchester United’s Class of 92 fame, are owners of League Two side Salford City.

The rise of Salford City has been well documented, the club getting promoted four times in five seasons.

And another group of retired professionals is hoping to enjoy similar success with League Two outfit Wycombe Wanderers.

Bergkamp, Kuyt and Larsson takeover

According to The Athletic, former players Henrik Larsson, Dennis Bergkamp and Dirk Kuyt want to buy and run the Chairboys.

The trio were planning to work with Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman in an advisory role.

An unnamed former Dutch international is also part of the group that has made a bid for the club with a view to “catapulting Wycombe into stardom”.

Larsson, Bergkamp and Kuyt retain a long-held ambition to purchase a Football League club and work there on a day-to-day basis.

They have already committed funds and can access more private equity if required, proving their intent.

The trio are serious about it. They plan to wipe out all of the club’s debts, cover running costs and use their knowledge, experience and contacts to help Wycombe become self-sufficient and successful. No expensive signings or hefty salaries.

And the commercial revenue that would come with Larsson, Bergkamp and Kuyt in charge would far outweigh the revenue provided from any other offer.

The star-studded consortium nearly reached a deal with the League Two club but American businessman Rob Couhig appears to have won the race to buy Wycombe.

The deal could be revived if Couhig’s attempted takeover falls through.

Collectively, Larsson, Bergkamp, Kuyt and Koeman won 48 major domestic honours, including 21 league titles.

Their plan is a serious one and, if not Wycombe, expect them to pursue another football club.
