It’s four years to the day since Jurgen Klopp was appointed Liverpool manager - and what a ride it’s been.

The German coach, who was in charge of Borussia Dortmund for seven years prior to his arrival at Anfield in October 2015, replaced Brendan Rodgers as the Reds’ boss.

Over the next few seasons, Klopp would completely transform the squad and turn the Merseyside outfit into champions of Europe for the first time since 2005.

Liverpool have been widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking teams in recent seasons - if not *the* most exciting attacking team on the continent - and it surely won’t be long before the club’s long wait for a league title finally comes to an end.

Klopp’s side have won all eight of their Premier League fixtures so far this season and currently sit eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City at the top of the table.

But what happened to Klopp’s first ever Liverpool XI and the players on the bench that afternoon against Tottenham at White Hart Lane?

Let’s take a closer look…

Goalkeeper: Simon Mignolet

Current club: Club Brugge

Mignolet had a brief stint as Liverpool’s No. 1 goalkeeper under Klopp but never managed to truly convince the German tactician.

After sitting on the bench behind Alisson Becker for most of last season, Mignolet decided enough was enough and signed for Club Brugge in his native Belgium.

Right-back: Nathaniel Clyne

Current club: Liverpool

Signed by Rodgers a couple of months before Klopp’s arrival, Clyne has sadly become something of a forgotten man at Anfield.

The England international, who hasn’t played for his country for several years now, spent last season on loan at Bournemouth and is currently firmly behind Trent Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order at Anfield.

Centre-back: Martin Skrtel

Current club: Istanbul Basaksehir

Skrtel brought an end to his eight-year association with Liverpool at the end of Klopp’s first season in charge of the Reds.

Now 34 years old, the former Slovakia international went on to play for Fenerbahce and then joined Atalanta in the summer… before his contract was terminated three weeks later by mutual consent. He joined Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir last month.

Centre-back: Mamadou Sakho

Current club: Crystal Palace

Sakho was sometimes good, other times terrible for Liverpool and didn’t last long under Klopp at Anfield.

The France international joined Crystal Palace on loan during the 2016-17 season and then signed for the Eagles permanently in August 2017 for a fee worth £24 million.

Left-back: Alberto Moreno

Current club: Villarreal

How Moreno lasted five years at Liverpool is a mystery. The error-prone left-back wasn’t defensively good enough for a top club.

The 27-year-old is pretty handy going forward, though, and was snapped up by Villarreal in the summer.

Central midfield: Emre Can

Current club: Juventus

Can decided he no longer wanted to be part of Klopp’s Liverpool revolution at the end of the 2017/18 campaign and ended up signing for Juventus on a free transfer.

Liverpool went on to win the Champions League while Can was recently left out of Juve’s 23-man Champions League squad.

It turns out the grass isn’t always greener.

Central midfield: Lucas Leiva

Current club: Lazio

A Liverpool cult hero who will always be welcomed back with open arms at Anfield, Lucas joined Lazio in 2017 and won the Coppa Italia last season.

Left-wing: Philippe Coutinho

Current club: Bayern Munich (on loan from Barcelona)

Liverpool fans and Klopp may have feared the worst when Coutinho, the team’s star player, left for Barcelona in January 2018. But football is a funny old game and, if anything, the Reds have improved significantly since selling the Brazilian playmaker.

Coutinho ended up having an absolute nightmare at Barcelona but is now rediscovering his form and confidence at Bayern Munich.

Right-wing: James Milner

Current club: Liverpool

In fairness to Rodgers, he made a couple of excellent signings shortly before he left Liverpool, bringing in both James Milner and Roberto Firmino during the summer of 2015.

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool first signed the previously underrated Milner on a free transfer after he’d left Manchester City, but the 33-year-old has been worth his weight in gold for the Reds over the past four years.

Playmaker: Adam Lallana

Current club: Liverpool

A decent squad player, Lallana is now in his sixth season as a Liverpool player.

Striker: Divock Origi

Current club: Liverpool

Liverpool fans probably wouldn’t have imagined back in 2015 that Origi would occupy a special place in all of their hearts a few years later.

The Belgian striker’s goals against Barcelona and Tottenham in the Champions League semi-finals and final, respectively, will never be forgotten by the Anfield faithful.

Subs

Joe Allen

Current club: Stoke City

Rodgers brought Allen to Liverpool with him from Swansea City but the Welsh midfielder was never Liverpool quality.

The 29-year-old has plied his trade with Stoke City since the 2016/17 campaign.

Jordon Ibe

Current club: Bournemouth

Big things were expected of Ibe but the 23-year-old’s career hasn’t panned out quite as expected.

Bournemouth splashed out a club-record £15 million to sign the former England Under-21 back in 2016, but he has only managed to score four goals in 86 rather underwhelming appearances.

Adam Bogdan

Current club: Free agent

An average top-flight goalkeeper, Bogdan wasn’t quite good enough for Liverpool and spent time on loan with Wigan Athletic and Hibernian before leaving Anfield as a free agent in the summer.

The 32-year-old remains without a club at the time of writing.

João Carlos Teixeira

Current club: Vitoria Guimaraes

The former Portugal Under-21 international left Liverpool for FC Porto in the summer of 2016 and joined his current club, Vitoria Guimaraes, two years later.

Jerome Sinclair

Current club: VVV-Venlo (on loan from Watford)

Sinclair left Liverpool for Watford in 2016 but has spent almost all of the next four years out on loan.

The 23-year-old scored four goals in 16 games with Oxford United last season and is now with VVV-Venlo in the Eredivisie.

Kolo Toure

Current club: Leicester City first-team coach

Toure, a Liverpool cult hero, has spent the past couple of years working alongside Rodgers in a coaching capacity, first with Celtic and now with Leicester.

The Ivorian broke Liverpool fans’ hearts over the weekend by passionately celebrating James Maddison’s equaliser.

Connor Randall

Current club: Arda Kardzhali

Randall spent time out on loan with Shrewsbury, Hearts and Rochdale before joining newly-promoted Bulgarian First League side Arda Kardzhali on a two-year deal last month.

Bit random but good luck to the lad.
