One glance at the Formula 1 history books confirms why Michael Schumacher is considered to be the greatest racer in the history of the sport.

The German’s reputation comes from his all-time record collection, which has been both a source of inspiration, and a point of envy for all other racers for a while now.

But the current form of Lewis Hamilton, which has seen him pursue a sixth F1 championship this year, has put the British racer in reach of records once thought to be untouchable.

Hamilton has already managed to win more circuits and pole positions than Schumacher during his career, and could eclipse some of the German’s most prestigious records should his form continue.

Here are six records that Hamilton could realistically take away from the legendary German, as identified by GP Fans.

Most World Drivers’ Championships

Schumacher (7)
Hamilton (5)

Lewis Hamilton won his maiden title back in 2008, and remarkably, the Brit has emerged victorious from four of the last five championships.

This ties Hamilton for second with Argentinian racer Juan Manuel Fangio, whose record five wins stood for 46 years before Schumacher left him in the dust.

It’s an exciting thought for British fans that if Hamilton can continue his current winning streak until his Mercedes deal expires, he will match the German’s record seven world titles.

Most Grand Prix wins

Schumacher (91)
Hamilton (82)

When Schumacher secured his 91st and final GP win in 2006, most in their right mind would have assumed that his record would never be broken.

That famous Chinese GP victory moved the German 40 victories clear of his nearest rival – the great French racer Alain Prost.

But Lewis Hamilton has dominated F1 ever since and is showing little sign of slowing down. The Brit has won just over 50% of all possible races since 2014, and still has dozens ahead.

Most wins at same Grand Prix

Schumacher (8)
Hamilton (7)

Schumacher won eight French GPs during his career, but impressively, Hamilton has managed to win seven in both Canada and Hungary.

And with at least one more attempt in Budapest and Montreal still to come for Hamilton, this hallmark Schumacher record looks to be in considerable danger.

Grand Prix wins in consecutive seasons

Schumacher (15)
Hamilton (13)

Hamilton also looks to be in touching distance of this Schumacher record, and will likely surpass it if he continues his current form and extends his contract beyond 2020.

He will no doubt be aware that the German managed to secure at least one race victory in 15 consecutive seasons, and should use that knowledge to spur him on to future victories.

Grand Prix ‘hat-tricks’

Schumacher (22)
Hamilton (14)

This record will be much more difficult for Lewis Hamilton to match. Schumacher managed a ridiculous number of ‘hat-tricks’ during his career – securing victory, pole position and fastest lap in 22 GPs.

If Hamilton hopes to get anywhere near this record, he would need to achieve a decent succession of near-perfect weeks, as Schumacher did at Ferrari between 2000-2004.

Grand Prix podiums

Schumacher (155)
Hamilton (146)

Over the course of his career, Lewis Hamilton has made the F1 podium his second home. He has achieved a podium finish in 60% of his races to date.

With his racetrack performance continuing to improve, Hamilton looks in pole position to swipe this record away from Schumacher.
