Jurgen Klopp has cemented his status as one of best managers in the world with his achievements at Liverpool.

The German was named Men’s Coach of the Year at FIFA’s ‘The Best’ awards ceremony in Milan last month after landing his first trophy with the Reds in June.

Liverpool’s Champions League triumph ended an unwanted streak of six-straight final defeats for Klopp.

And it seems like the trophies are going to pour in at Anfield now.

Liverpool fans couldn’t be happier with their club’s current situation but Klopp’s former employer Borussia Dortmund tried to ruin it all in the summer.

It was at Dortmund where Klopp established himself as a fine coach, winning the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012 and reaching the final of the Champions League a year later.

And the German club’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has revealed that he tried to persuade Klopp to return to the club in the summer of 2018.

BVB were coming off of a rocky 2017/18 season in which Peter Bosz was sacked before temporary boss Peter Stoger guided them to a fourth-placed finish.

Lucien Favre took over from Stoger but Watzke has admitted in his new book that he wasn’t Dortmund’s first choice.

“I knew Jurgen would fulfil his contract until the end,” Watzke writes in the book, serialised by Bild. “Jurgen has always fulfilled his contracts.”

“But I wanted a new path at BVB and I at least had to ask Jurgen to consider.”

The offer came after Klopp had just taken Liverpool to the Champions League final.

He was mid-flight when Watzke called.

“My phone rang while I was on the plane. ‘Jurgen, you have to come back’,” Klopp reveals. “I thought he was kidding.

'Are you stupid? Have you been drinking? How did you get the idea? I've got a few more years in Liverpool’.

Watzke added: “I would not have forgiven myself for not asking him at that moment.”

Klopp rejected Watzke and went on to win the Champions League with Liverpool the following season.

With Liverpool now on the cusp of something special, he made the right call.
