Earlier this week, Simone Biles became the most successful female gymnast in World Championship history after claiming 21 medals in Stuttgart, Germany.

This week, Biles claimed another as she edges closer to becoming the greatest gymnast to have ever competed in the World Gymnastics Championships.

After surpassing Russia’s Svetlana Khorkina record as the most decorated woman in the history of the competition, Simone Biles claimed a record-breaking 22nd world medal today with a score of 58.999 in the all-round final. “I never think of records - I just go out there and do what I came to do,” she said.

Biles took gold with a margin of more than two points as Xijing Tang of China placed second with 56.899 and Angelina Melnikova of Russia collecting the bronze with 56.399.

The American’s all-round victory now means she claims a sensational fifth world title at this event and moves closer to securing the most medals overall in World Gymnastics Championships history, a record held by Belarussian Vitaly Scherbo in the 1990s.

The 22-year-old also led Team USA to victory by a sizeable 5.801 points over Russia to secure their fifth straight world team title. This win makes it Simone’s 16th gold overall and extends Team USA dominant streak at the World Championships.

The American also holds three silver medals and three bronze medals at previous championships to bring her tally to 22 medals.

Having broken the female record, Biles is set to revise the record books once more as she only needs two more medals to eclipse Vitaly Scherbo’s tally of 23 medals. Biles will aim to accomplish that in her upcoming vault and uneven bar finals which run through to Sunday.
