It appears that things will continue to go to plan for Khabib Nurmagomedov, judging by recent reports.

The UFC Lightweight champion recorded his 28th professional victory last month with his third-round submission of Dustin Poirier.

That's the longest undefeated streak in MMA right now, with the last 12 coming in the UFC.

Nurmagomedov's biggest win came a year ago, of course, as he submitted Conor McGregor in the fourth round and a rematch has been on the cards ever since.

But the champion's father recently admitted that the blockbuster meeting would have to wait as there is a fight against Tony Ferguson to come first.

"Before McGregor, we should finish our business with Ferguson," Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov said.

"Because he had 28 fights and runs a 12-fight winning streak in the UFC, just like Khabib. Such winning streaks and such big fights have never happened in the UFC.

"So, I think Madison Square Garden is a good place for this fight, but we won't fight earlier than March."

And according to ESPN's Ariel Helwani, that's exactly what's planned.

"What is going on with Tony Ferguson?" he said. "I suspect that Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib is going to happen March or April and I'm hearing that New York City is being discussed."

Ferguson has also had 28 fights in MMA - although, he doesn't boast the perfect record that Nurmagomedov does.

But the American has won 12 in a row in UFC, meaning that something has to give if he does indeed face the champion next year.

Should Nurmagomedov win once again, McGregor will surely be coming for that rematch, potentially in Moscow.

McGregor tweeted in September that he wants the rematch booked for Moscow and his target's father is happy to oblige.

"If McGregor wants it, then Moscow is waiting for him," he told YouTube channel "Zhivina100. "He said once that he has more fans here than Khabib.

"We want to host him in Moscow, he is welcome - we are waiting."
