In 2011, EA Sports released Fight Night Champion and fans have been waiting for a sequel ever since.

Now, an online petition asking the video game developers to create a new boxing game has amassed almost 11,000 signatures of its 15,000 target.

The change.org petition was set up by a user under the pseudonym ‘New Boxing Game’ and calls for a sequel in the Fight Night series to match the growing popularity of the sport.

“There is no doubt about it. Boxing IS on the rise again. The excitement and entertainment the sport brings to the masses is unquestionably breathtaking,” the petition reads.

Set up two years ago, the petition makes reference to some of the most anticipated bouts of the modern era.

“With Anthony Joshua's stoppage win over Wladimir Klitschko in a heavyweight clash that can only be described as a modern classic and the announcement of Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin which is predicted to be an immense showdown, boxing IS booming.

“It is therefore a request that I, along with many other boxing fans around the world, believe there should be another boxing game such as the highly rated Fight Night series.

“It would mean a great deal to the boxing community as well as many casual fans to be given an opportunity to relive the great moments from fighters, old and new, all over again.”

It’s not only boxing fans calling for a re-release, but the industry’s main players too.

Eddie Hearn, promoter and director of Matchroom Sport, told fans on Twitter that he was “trying to convince EA Sports” to continue the franchise.

Speaking to ThaBoxingVoice, Hearn later said: “Every time I tweet about it [Fight Night], it goes crazy!

“So, EA Sports, if you’re watching, or any big-game developer, we’re here.”

With fans now appealing in their thousands to EA Sports, it’s likely to be only a matter of time before the next instalment of the Fight Night series hits our shelves.
