Simone Biles landed a full-twisting double-tuck to dismount her way into the history books at this year's Gymnastics World Championships.

She won gold in the beam, her 24th world championship medal, making her the most decorated world championship gymnast ever.

She had already become the most successful female gymnast in world championship history earlier in the week, surpassing Russia’s Svetlana Khorkina's record of 20 medals. With her gold for the balance beam, Biles overtook Belarusian gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, who won a total of 23 world championship medals in his career.

Not content with simply outdoing Scherbo by one, the 22-year-old went on to break her record and take the podium once more, winning gold for the floor exercise. This brings Biles' world championship medal total to 25, emphatically securing her status as the greatest gymnast of all time, male or female.

Biles scored 15.066 for her beam routine and 15.133 for the floor. Having already won team gold, all-around individual gold and vault gold, Biles' total gold-medal haul at this year's championship comes to five – the first time she's done so.

In her final event of the competition – the uneven bars – Biles placed fifth, ending her chance of taking home a medal in all six disciplines she competed in, as she did in last year's championships.

Her final win takes her total of world championship golds to 19, ahead of Scherbo's 12, extending her record.

Biles said: "Overall it was a very happy World Championships, probably one of my best ones yet."

Now all attention will turn to next year's Tokyo Olympics and whether Biles can improve on the four golds she won in Rio. She said: "I feel pretty confident heading into Olympic year next year. I can't be more thrilled with the performance I put out at this World Championships and it only gives me confidence moving forward."
