There were sickening scenes of racism throughout Bulgaria and England's Euro 2020 qualifier on Monday night.

What we should be telling you is that England won the game 6-0 thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford, Ross Barkley (x2), Raheem Sterling (x2) and Harry Kane.

However, disgusting shows of bigotry from home supporters - including Nazi salutes and monkey chants - have sadly made the headlines. But it simply cannot be ignored.

The game had to be halted on two occasions. The first came in the 28th minute with the stadium announcer condemning the behaviour and claiming the game could be abandoned.

But the abuse didn't stop there, leading to another delay just before half time with the referee engaging in conversation with England manager Gareth Southgate.

Popov confronts Bulgaria fans

Unfortunately, the behaviour of some Bulgaria fans - as demonstrated by footage on the ITV broadcast - would continue well into the second half.

And that's in spite of some admirable actions by Bulgaria captain Ivelin Popov at half time, pleading with his own supporters to halt the abuse.

In the words of Henry Winter: "[Popov] talking to supporters at the break, arguing with them, clearly realising that this game is heading for an abandonment if the home fans continue their monkey chants."

Rashford takes to Twitter

It might not have been successful, but credit to Popov for doing his part to tackle the vile behaviour when he could so easily have walked straight down the tunnel.

And his actions didn't go without credit. Rashford, mature beyond his years once again, saluted Popov during a series of tweets condemning Monday night's racism.

The Manchester United forward penned: "Also been told what the Bulgaria captain did at half-time. To stand alone and do the right thing takes courage and acts like that shouldn’t go unnoticed. #NoToRacism."

Too right, Marcus. While Popov might be the captain, it would have been nice to see some of his Bulgaria teammates join him and the consecutive delays mean they can't have been unaware.

There was a great paranoia amongst the Bulgarian people going into this game and once again, they have been let down a racist minority.

But England and its players can be proud of two things: silencing the racism with a 6-0 victory and going out of their way to highlight behaviour that has no place in football, nor wider society.
