It was an awful night for football in Sofia last night after the visiting England team were subjected to vile racist abuse from the stands.

It was simply unacceptable behaviour from the Bulgarian fans and has no place in football in this current day and age.

The foul nature of the chants and gesticulating were clear for all to see and calls for severe punishment have been ringing out ever since.

Now, according to Sky, it has been revealed that the Bulgarian Football president, Borisov Mihaylov, has resigned from his post following the dreadful events.

The Bulgarian prime minister had called for his resignation earlier in the day and now it looks as though that call has been heeded.

An official statement reads:

"After many years spent in the post and with his many contacts at a high international level, Mr Mikhailov expresses his firm readiness to continue to help the development of Bulgarian football in every way possible."

England ran out 6-0 winners on the night but that drubbing was entirely overshadowed by events in the stands.

At half-time, 50 individuals believed to be Neo-Nazis were ejected from the stadium for the part they played.

It was a thoroughly forgettable night for all involved and one can only hope that UEFA's punishment is swift and firm.

More information to follow as the story develops.
