Footballers are worth more money than ever before and some of the fees that clubs have paid out for the world’s best players over the past couple of years have been mind-blowing.

Player market values will continue to rise over the coming years as the elite clubs profit from increased TV revenue and money from sponsorship deals.

We all know who the most expensive footballers in the world are right now - the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi immediately spring to mind - but do you know who the current top 10 most expensive players in the world per position are?

We’ve used Transfermarkt’s database to find out the top 10 most expensive goalkeepers, left-backs, right-backs, centre-backs, central midfielders and so on.

So without further ado, let’s take a closer look…

Goalkeepers

10. Andre Onana (Ajax) | £31.5m

9. Jordan Pickford (Everton) | £36m

8. Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) | £49.5m

7. Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan) | £49.5m

6. Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea) | £54m

5. David de Gea (Man Utd) | £58.5m

4. Ederson (Man City) | £63m

3. Alisson Becker (Liverpool) | £72m

2. Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona) | £81m

1. Jan Oblak | £90m

A little surprising to see Pickford in the top 10? Perhaps, although the Everton shot-stopper’s reputation was enhanced significantly by the 2018 World Cup. Oblak and Ter Stegen are widely regarded as the best in the business right now, so it’s not a shock to see them in first and second place, respectively.

Wondering where Manuel Neuer is? The 33-year-old is way down in 24th place, valued at £16.2 million.

Right-backs

10. Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea) | £31.5m

9. Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid) | £31.5m

8. Hector Bellerin (Arsenal) | £36m

7. Nelson Semedo (Barcelona) | £36m

6. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Man Utd) | £36m

5. Kyle Walker (Man City) | £45m

4. Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) | £45m

3. Joao Cancelo (Man City) | £49.5m

2. Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) | £63m

1. Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) | £72m

At just 21 years old, Alexander-Arnold is already the most expensive right-back on the market right now. How impressive is that?! Imagine what his market value will be in a few years’ time.

Wan-Bissaka was signed for £45 million in the summer, but Transfermarkt value the talented 21-year-old to be worth £9 million less than United paid Crystal Palace for his services.

Centre-backs

10. Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan) | £54m

9. Marquinhos (PSG) | £58.5m

8. Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) | £63m

7. Harry Maguire (Man Utd) | £63m

6. Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid) | £63m

5. Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich) | £63m

4. Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli) | £67.5m

3. Aymeric Laporte (Man City) £67.5m

2. Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus) | £67.5m

1. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) £90m

It’s no surprise to see Van Dijk, who won UEFA’s Men’s Player of the Year award in August, is the most expensive central defender in the world at present. Maguire, though, is valued at £17 million less than the £80 million Man Utd paid Leicester City in the summer.

Meanwhile, 32-year-old Gerard Pique is 38th on the list, valued at £31.5 million. Sergio Ramos, 33, is 59th on this list, now valued at £22.5 million.

Left-backs

10. Alejandro Grimaldo (Benfica) | £28.8m

9. Benjamin Mendy (Man City) | £31.5m

8. Alex Telles (FC Porto) | £31.5m

7. Ben Chilwell (Leicester City) | £31.5m

6. Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid) | £36m

5. Alex Sandro (Juventus) | £36m

4. Jordi Alba (Barcelona) | £45m

3. Jose Gaya (Valencia) | £45m

2. David Alaba (Bayern Munich) | £49.5m

1. Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) | £54m

Yep, it’s another Liverpool player who finds himself on top of the pile - and who would disagree that, on current form, Robertson is the world’s best left-back?

Marcelo has probably been Europe’s best left-back over the past 5-10 years, but the 31-year-old Brazilian is now 22nd on the list, valued at £22.5 million.

Defensive midfielders

10. Sergio Busquets (Barcelona) | £45m

9. Marcelo Brozovic (Inter Milan) | £45m

8. Ruben Neves (Wolves) | £45m

7. Fabinho (Liverpool) | £45m

6. Thomas Partey (Atletico Madrid) | £45m

5. Declan Rice (West Ham) | £45m

4. Lucas Torreira (Arsenal) | £49m

3. Casemiro (Real Madrid) | £54m

2. Jorginho (Chelsea) | £58.5m

1. Rodri (Man City) | £72m

Fabinho is surely worth more than £45 million - he’s been fantastic for Liverpool over the past 12 months or so - while £49 million for Torreira looks a little generous. Then again, Granit Xhaka is 11th on the list, valued at £36 million, so…

Central midfielders

10. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio) | £58.5m

9. Tanguy Ndombele (Tottenham) | £58.5m

8. Miralem Pjanic (Juventus) | £63m

7. Thiago (Bayern Munich) | £63m

6. Arthur (Barcelona) | £63m

5. Marco Verratti (PSG) | £67.5m

4. Frenkie de Jong (Barcelona) | £76.5m

3. Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid) | £81m

2. Paul Pogba (Man Utd) | £90m

1. N’Golo Kante (Chelsea) | £90m

There are some proper ballers on this list, although Ndombele’s market value will soon decrease unless Tottenham’s form improves.

Pogba in joint-first place valued at £90 million will certainly divide opinion, although football fans will love the fact that the loveable and modest Kante is currently alongside his compatriot as the world’s most expensive midfielder.

Attacking midfielders (and second strikers)

10. Isco (Real Madrid) | £54m

9. Nabil Fekir (Real Betis) | £54m

8. Bruno Fernandes (Sporting Lisbon) | £54m

7. Paulo Dybala (Juventus) | £67.5m

6. Philippe Coutinho (Bayern Munich) | £81m

5. Dele Alli (Tottenham) | £81m

4. Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen) | £81m

3. Christian Eriksen (Tottenham) | £90m

2. Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid) £90m

1. Kevin De Bruyne (Man City) | £117m

Coutinho’s market value has dropped by £60 million from January 2018, when he signed for Barcelona from Liverpool. The Brazilian currently has the same value as Alli and 20-year-old Havertz, who has a massive reputation.

De Bruyne is one of the best footballers in the world, so his £117 million value looks pretty accurate.

Right-wingers

10. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) | £54m

9. Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) | £54m

8. Riyad Mahrez (Man City) | £54m

7. Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) | £54m

6. Federico Chiesa (Fiorentina) | £54m

5. Nicolas Pepe (Arsenal) | £67.5m

4. Bernardo Silva (Man City) | £90m

3. Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) | £90m

2. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) | £135m

1. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) | £135m

Bale is now worth little over £50 million, which is a little unexpected given the fact he’s still only 30 and one of the world’s best forwards. Sancho, at 19 years of age, is already valued at a whopping £90 million.

Salah and Messi, who is five years older than the Egyptian, are both valued at an astronomical £135 million. Many would argue, though, that the latter is priceless.

Left-wingers

10. Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli) | £58.5m

9. Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) | £63m

8. Son Heung-min (Tottenham) | £72m

7. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) | £81m

6. Leroy Sane (Man City) | £90m

5. Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona) | £90m

4. Sadio Mane (Liverpool) | £108m

3. Raheem Sterling (Man City) | £126m

2. Eden Hazard (Real Madrid) | £135m

1. Neymar (PSG) | £162m

The fact Ronaldo is still valued at £81 million, despite the fact he turns 35 in February, is very impressive. Meanwhile, it would take more than £108 million for Liverpool to part with the excellent Mane.

Neymar is currently valued as the world’s second-most expensive footballer behind a player we’ll come on to in a bit.

Centre-forwards

10. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) | £63m

9. Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal) | £63m

8. Gabriel Jesus (Man City) | £63m

7. Mauro Icardi (PSG) | £67.5m

6. Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan) | £67.5m

5. Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) | £72m

4. Marcus Rashford (Man Utd) | £72m

3. Antoine Griezmann (Barcelona) | £117m

2. Harry Kane (Tottenham) | £135m

1. Kylian Mbappe (PSG) | £180m

Rashford and Firmino valued at the same price? Not sure about that. But it’s nice to see that Arsenal teammates Aubameyang and Lacazette have the same market value.

Mbappe is the world’s most expensive player at the moment, priced at a staggering £180 million.
