Scott McTominay has become an increasingly important player for Manchester United over the past couple of seasons. The Scottish midfielder was given his chance in the first team by Jose Mourinho, who ended up taking a shine to him.McTominay quickly became a Mourinho favourite because, unless other members of the squad, the youngster did exactly what his manager asked of him on the pitch and always gave 100 per cent effort.Mourinho even invented a new award for McTominay - who has been nicknamed ‘McSauce’ by United fans on social media - at the club’s end of season awards ceremony back in May 2018.McTominay was handed a trophy for ‘Manager’s Player of the Year’ - an award that was not on the honours list at the start of the evening - despite only making 23 appearances for the Red Devils that season.

“He is the one who has done everything. He started the season in the academy and ended it playing big games in the Premier League. I thought this kid cannot go home without an award,” Mourinho said at the time.

“I always say that for me there are not young players or old players, it is just about the quality of the personality and this kid has everything that I want, so I think that it is good for the younger boys in the academy to look at him as an example of player.”

Lots of people thought this was a thinly-veiled dig at Paul Pogba, who found himself at loggerheads with Mourinho, but the revered Portuguese coach does genuinely have huge admiration and respect for the Scotland international.

In an interview with Sky Sports this week, it was revealed that Mourinho still calls McTominay after matches now, despite the fact he was sacked by United almost a year ago.

"Jose is very special to me,” McTominay admitted.

He still keeps in contact with me now and keeps in touch after some games.

"He'll always have a special place in mine and my family's heart because he's the one who brought you in, he was the one who trusted you, he was the one who had belief in you.

"I owe a tremendous amount of credit to him because if it wasn't for him I might not necessarily be sitting in this seat."

McSauce and Mourinho is a better love story than Twilight.
