Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold’s omission from the FIFA FIFPro Men’s World11 last month was rather scandalous.

Alexander-Arnold was brilliant for the Reds last season, helping Liverpool triumph in the Champions League.

Yet he couldn’t find his way into a defence that somehow included Marcelo.

There were plenty of highlights in the 21-year-old’s campaign. He became the youngest player to record three assists in a Premier League match against Watford in February.

And his instinctive corner for Divock Origi’s goal in the 4-0 win against Barcelona was something the club’s supporters will never forget.

A mural of Alexander-Arnold was unveiled in Liverpool in the summer as a city celebrated the achievements of one of its own.

And there’s even more to celebrate now, for the England international has etched his name into the Guinness World Records.

Trent the record-holder

Alexander-Arnold’s 12 assists in the 2018/19 Premier League season have earned him the Guinness World Records title for the most Premier League assists by a defender in a single campaign.

To make the achievement even sweeter, Alexander-Arnold has replaced two Everton players - Andy Hinchcliffe (11 assists in 1994/95) and Leighton Baines (11 assists in 2010/11) in the record books.

Alexander-Arnold said: “It’s an honour. I’ve always wanted to go forward and help the team to create as many chances as possible.

"It’s obviously down to the lads to put the ball into the back of the net, because football is a team game and without them this record wouldn’t be possible.

"It’s an unbelievably proud moment for me and my family, and something I hope will stand for a few years.”

Alexander-Arnold went on to credit teammate Andy Robertson for spurring him on.

The full-backs enjoy a healthy rivalry that culminated with them combining for 29 assists in all competitions last season.

The right-back earned bragging rights, though, after Robertson recorded 11 assists in the league.

Alexander-Arnold added: “He probably thought he had the competition wrapped up!

“Near the end of the season we both hit really good form, we were both getting lots of assists and it was good to help the team in those games that we needed to win.”
