Lionel Messi collected his 2018/19 European Golden Shoe award today.

It’s the sixth time Messi has collected the accolade after he notched 36 goals last season.

The award is presented each season to the leading goalscorer in matches from the top division of every European league.

Goals scored in the top five leagues according to the UEFA coefficients (currently Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Serie A) are multiplied by two, goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 are multiplied by 1.5 and goals scored in leagues ranked 22 and below and multiplied by one.

And just like they have done with the Ballon d’Or, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the award in the past decade.

As we say Messi has now won it six times, while Ronaldo has won it three times.

So, we’ve decided to ignore the duo and work out which player would have won the Golden Shoe if they didn’t exist.
