We're now approaching the return of the Premier League after the international break and a number of players will be looking to continue their early season form.

Kevin De Bruyne has been the standout performer so far, having recorded eight assists and scored twice already this season.

Joel Matip and Sadio Mane have both impressed for Liverpool, while Tammy Abraham has been on fire in front of goal for Chelsea.

In the past few weeks, we have been looking at numerous Premier League stats provided by WhoScored.com.

We have already looked at every Premier League club's best and worst player so far this season, as well as listing the best and worst XIs of the campaign.

And now we have decided to take a look at the best five players in every position according to stats recorded so far this season.

Goalkeepers:

5. Bernd Leno - 6.79

4. Kasper Schmeichel - 6.83

3. Tim Krul - 6.86

2. Hugo Lloris - 6.87

1. Nick Pope - 6.89

Interestingly, Lloris has been ranked the second best goalkeeper this season despite making a few howlers.

Right-backs:

5. Cesar Azpilicueta - 6.99

4. Frederic Guilbert - 7.00

3. Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 7.18

2. Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7.38

1. Ricardo Pereira - 7.51

Pereira has been brilliant for Leicester this season and throughly deserves top spot, in front of Alexander-Arnold and Wan-Bissaka.

Azpilicueta has come under some criticism this season but just about cracks the top five.

Centre-backs:

5. James Tarkowski - 7.07

4. Fikayo Tomori - 7.16

3. Virgil van Dijk - 7.39

2. Willy Boly - 7.45

1. Joel Matip - 7.62

Matip has well and truly established himself as Van Dijk's centre-back partner and the stats show just how impressive he has been.

Tomori has also impressed despite having virtually no Premier League experience before this campaign.

Left-backs:

5. Eric Pieters - 7.10

4. Marcos Alonso - 7.13

3. Andrew Robertson - 7.20

2. Emerson Palmieri - 7.22

1. Diego Rico - 7.35

Surprisingly, Rico takes the number one spot having recorded two assists so far this season.

Chelsea's two left-backs also both crack the top five.

Defensive midfielders:

5. Declan Rice - 7.05

4. Jorginho - 7.12

3. Matteo Guendouzi - 7.14

2. Rodrigo - 7.55

1. Wilfried Ndidi - 7.55

Like Pereira, Ndidi has been brilliant for Leicester this season and is ranked the best defensive midfielder in England's top tier, just ahead of Rodrigo.

Jorginho was far from a fan-favourite at Chelsea in his debut campaign but he appears to have turned his form around.

Centre midfielders:

5. Joao Moutinho - 7.08

4. Tanguy Ndombele - 7.10

3. Scott McTominay - 7.13

2. Paul Pogba - 7.15

1. John McGinn - 7.59

McGinn has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, having scored three times and assisted once in his opening seven games.

Interestingly, Pogba has been ranked the second best player in his position despite not scoring so far this term.

Attacking midfielders:

5. David Silva - 7.05

4. Jack Grealish - 7.27

3. Mason Mount - 7.40

2. James Maddison - 7.42

1. Kevin De Bruyne - 8.05

Kevin De Bruyne has been on fire this season and has been the best player in the Premier League, let alone just in his position.

He's followed by a trio of young English talent: Maddison, Mount and Grealish.

Right-wingers

5. Richarlison - 7.20

4. Adama Traore - 7.21

3. Mohamed Salah - 7.38

2. Bernardo Silva - 7.42

1. Riyad Mahrez - 7.74

Pep Guardiola has give Mahrez more playing time so far this season and he's been repaid, with the Algerian netting twice and recording three assists.

Traore jumped up to fourth in his position after scoring twice against Manchester City last game week.

Left-wingers

5. Anwar El-Ghazi - 7.15

4. Son Heung-min - 7.35

3. Felipe Anderson - 7.53

2. Sadio Mane - 7.53

1. Raheem Sterling - 7.75

Statistically, Sterling has been the second best player in the Premier League this season, behind teammate De Bruyne.

Son makes the list despite missing the start of the season with Spurs.

Centre-forwards

5. Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang - 7.19

4. Tammy Abraham - 7.47

3. Sebastian Haller - 7.59

2. Roberto Firmino - 7.66

1. Sergio Aguero - 7.74

It's no surprise to see Aguero being statistically the best forward. He has scored eight times already this season and is averaging a goal every 70 minutes of football.

Firmino may not score that many goals, but he is without doubt the most complete forward and takes second spot.

West Ham splashed £45 million on Haller this season and that appears to be money well spent.
