There is an increasing number of British players deciding to ply their trade outside of the Premier League.

While there are many one-off examples in the past (i.e Mark Hughes, Ian Rush and David Beckham) it’s becoming more and more common.

Jadon Sancho may well be the catalyst for that.

Sancho left Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund in 2017 because he felt he wouldn’t be given the first-team opportunities at the Etihad.

And it’s proved to be an inspired decision.

And it got us thinking: How are other top British players currently playing abroad getting on?

GIVEMESPORT have looked at the 21 British players who are currently in the top two tiers in either Spain, Germany, Italy or Spain.

Ethan Ampadu | RB Leipzig (on loan from Chelsea)

Ampadu is very highly-rated at Stamford Bridge and surely has a future at the club under Frank Lampard. He’s also made 11 appearances for Wales but is yet to make it off the bench in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig this season.

Lampard probably isn’t too happy about that.

Arvin Appiah | Almeria

Appiah attracted plenty of attention this summer but surprisingly left Nottingham Forest for Segunda Division side Almeria for £8 million.

Still only 18, Appiah has made one appearance for Almeria’s first-team this season.

Lewis Baker | Fortuna Dusseldorf (on loan from Chelsea)

The Chelsea midfielder is now 24-years-old and is currently on loan at his seventh club.

But he's playing regularly in Germany’s top-flight for Fortuna Dusseldorf - although he did score an own-goal in his second match against Bayer Leverkusen.

Does he have a career at Stamford Bridge? Probably not.

Gareth Bale | Real Madrid

Looked set to leave Real Madrid in the summer but, somehow, remains at the Bernabeu. Has had quite an incredible career in Spain despite what fans and media say in Madrid.

Has scored twice for Real this season and is playing regularly again under Zinedine Zidane.

Keanan Bennetts | Borussia Monchengladbach

Left Spurs for the German side in the summer of 2018 but is still yet to make a first-team appearance.

Has been on the bench twice this season so the 20-year-old is clearly highly-rated.

Oliver Burke | Alaves (on loan from West Brom)

Despite only being 22, Burke’s CV is rather unique. Nottingham Forest, Bradford City (loan), RB Leipzig, West Brom, Celtic (loan) and Alaves (loan).

West Brom spent £15 million on the Scot in 2017 but he’s been allowed to leave on loan to La Liga side Alves.

Alaves are currently 17th and Burke has played four times.

Bobby Duncan | Fiorentina

Steven Gerrard’s cousin controversially left Liverpool earlier this season after his agent’s outburst on Twitter.

Isn’t expected to play first-team football anytime soon but did score a screamer for the youth side last month.

Jack Harper | Alcorcon

Remember him? The Scottish footballer that used to play for Real Madrid?

Well, after a brief spell at Brighton, Harper returned to Spain with Malaga but is now on loan at Alcoron from Getafe.

The 23-year-old has played in all eight of Alcoron’s Segunda Division matches this season but is yet to score.

Liam Henderson | Verona

At the age of 23, Henderson has already played in three different countries with Celtic, Rosenborg and now Verona. He also spent six months at Bari last season.

The midfielder has played three league games for Verona this season as they sit pretty in 10th in Serie A following their promotion last season.

Jonjoe Kenny | Schalke

Has already made 31 Premier League appearances for Everton but was allowed to join Schalke on loan this summer.

The 22-year-old is impressing in Germany with Schalke currently 6th in the Bundesliga with the defender scoring once in seven league appearances.

Ademola Lookman | RB Leipzig

Never really given a chance at Everton, making 36 Premier League appearances over the course of three seasons.

Had a successful loan spell at RB Leipzig during the 2017/18 season, encouraging the German side to splash £22.5 million on him in the summer just gone.

Has only made two appearances for the Bundesliga club this season, though.

Rabbi Matondo | Schalke

We mentioned about Sancho being a catalyst and that’s certainly the case for Matondo, who also left Man City for Germany in January.

Played eight times for Schalke last season and, after recovering from an injury, has played once and scored once in the league this season.

Has also played for Wales three times.

Stephy Mavididi | Dijon

After eight years at Arsenal, Mavididi signed for Juventus in August 2018. He actually made a Serie A appearance last season becoming the first English player since David Platt in 1992 to play for Juventus.

He's spending this season on loan at Dijon and the 21-year-old forward scored in their latest fixture, a 1-0 win over Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Tope Obadeyi | Sochaux

Obadeyi played for numerous football league clubs during his time in England and has also had stints in Portugal and Scotland.

The 29-year-old now finds himself in Ligue 2 with Sochaux but is failing to play first-team football.

Reece Oxford | Augsburg

Oxford made his West Ham debut at the age of 16, becoming the club’s youngest ever player. But he couldn’t push on at the Hammers and had loan spells at Reading, Borussia Monchengladbach and Augsburg.

He’s now joined the latter on a permanent deal worth around £2.1million.

Still only 20, Oxford has made seven appearances in the Bundesliga this season and could well return to the Premier League one day.

Aaron Ramsey | Juventus

The Welshman’s Juve career got off to a slow start thanks to a hamstring injury. But he scored in his first Serie A game and has impressed in his five appearances for the Old Lady.

Jadon Sancho | Borussia Dortmund

The most exciting talent in European football?

The 19-year-old has already scored six times this season and is now an England regular. Borrusia Dortmund won’t be able to keep hold of him for too much longer.

Samuel Shashoua | CD Tenerife

The 20-year-old left Spurs to join Segunda División side Tenerife but is yet to make an appearance this season.

Chris Smalling | Roma

Smalling was something of a joke figure at Manchester United but, during his three appearances for Roma, the side have conceded just one goal.

Kieran Trippier | Atletico Madrid

Trippier has started his career in Spain superbly. And with Tottenham looking a bit of a mess this season, the right-back appears to have made a very good decision in joining Diego Simeone’s side.

Ronaldo Vieira | Sampdoria

Represented England at youth level and played 71 times for Leeds in the Championship. But he joined Sampdoria last summer to replace the outgoing Lucas Torreria.

Appeared in 14 league games last season and has already made six this campaign - although Sampdoria are currently propping up Serie A.
