There’s no denying that David Luiz was the least glamorous signing Arsenal made over the summer.

Following the arrivals of Nicolas Pepe, William Saliba, Kieran Tierney and Gabriel Martinelli for a combined total of £130 million, the Brazil international joined Unai Emery’s side on deadline day in an £8 million deal.

Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Luiz brought with him a wealth of valuable experience gained during spells at Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

The veteran centre-back is a four-time league champion, winning once in Portugal, twice in France and once in England.

Luiz is also the proud owner of both a Champions League and Europa League winners’ medal, while his other major honours include nine domestic cup triumphs.

With such a glittering CV, the former Benfica man could be forgiven for being accustomed to achieving success wherever he plays.

But if you thought Luiz might dial down his expectations at Arsenal considering their failure to compete with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in recent years, think again.

The Brazilian has boldly claimed that the Gunners are capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season after assessing the improvements made to Emery’s squad.

"For me, if you start something, and we've just started the Premier League and all of the competitions, if you don't think you can win the competition then you won't start anything in your life," Luiz told NBC Sports, per the Mirror.

"I want to win titles with Arsenal. I want to improve and adapt myself for the style of Arsenal, as a club and how the manager wants us to play. I think we can do that together.

"My vision, my ambition and my will is always to fight for the title and between the club, the players and the coach, we have the possibility to fight for the title. I think this club deserves to shine again."

That’s certainly a tall order given that Arsenal are already nine points behind leaders Liverpool only eight matches into the new campaign.

And perhaps more tellingly, last year’s runners-up eased to a comfortable 3-1 victory over the Gunners when they met at Anfield in August.

You have to admire his optimism, but surely Luiz is asking a bit much to bring the title to the Emirates this season.
