Fred is on track to go down as one of the biggest flops in Manchester United history.

The Brazilian was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £53 million deal in the summer of 2018, making him the fifth-most expensive arrival at Old Trafford of all time.

Once revered as a complete all-round midfielder, Fred has since struggled to justify the enormous fee paid to secure his services.

The midfielder ended his debut season with a disappointing return of one goal in 25 appearances, which has seen him slip down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fred might’ve stood a chance of clawing his way back into contention during pre-season, but a misjudgement cost him a chunk of time to prepare for the new campaign.

According to the Times, he booked his wedding for July under the assumption wouldn’t have been unable to marry his partner in the close season due to being in Brazil’s Copa America squad.

Unfortunately, though, Fred wasn’t among the 23 players Tite picked and guided to a ninth title on home soil.

If that wasn’t a bad enough way to cap off a dismal first 12 months in England, he was then forced to beg Solskjaer for an extended vacation so his wedding could go ahead as planned.

According to the report, the incident made Fred the butt of jokes from his teammates and some staff were surprised that he had been given extra time off.

Fred hasn’t benefitted from missing ten days of pre-season, what with Solskjaer admitting he prefers the options of Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.

“He’s fine, he’s working hard. At the moment, he’s behind Paul and Nemanja and Scott. That’s the reason he hasn’t been involved,” the Norwegian said of the 26-year-old in late August, per Manchester Evening News.

“It’s the most difficult period in August to manage a big squad because there is only one game a week and everyone is fit because we’ve just had pre-season and everyone is ready to play.

“September, October, November, December is when injuries come and that’s when you play most of the games, so he will play plenty of football.”

That said, Fred has so far made just seven appearances this season, completing the full 90 minutes twice in the Europa League and once in the League Cup and Premier League apiece.

Despite his intermittent involvement, the former Shakhtar man is in contention to start against Liverpool at Anfield this Sunday while Pogba recovers from an ankle injury.
