Manchester United and Liverpool have both had some top-class strikers during the Premier League era.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robbie Fowler… the names just reel off the tongue.

But which strikers would make the top 5? And, more importantly, who is the best of them all?

Sky Sports had this discussion for their Saturday Social feature, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash between the two fierce rivals at Old Trafford, and the list is bound to spark plenty of debate.

First of all, only players who have scored 20 or more goals in a single Premier League season were considered.

This meant that several big-name forwards failed to make the cut, including Michael Owen.

As the host pointed out, this felt a little harsh. Owen was Liverpool’s top scorer for seven consecutive seasons and even won a Ballon d’Or while at Anfield.

But rules are rules and it left the lads on Sky Sports with 11 players to choose from:

Man Utd: Dimitar Berbatov, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie, Dwight Yorke.

Liverpool: Robbie Fowler, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres.

And now to whittle them down to the top 5. Here’s who they went for…

5. Ruud van Nistelrooy

Premier League appearances for United: 150
Goals: 95

One of the best out-and-out goalscorers on this list, Van Nistelrooy was absolutely ruthless inside the box.

The Dutchman bagged 95 goals in 150 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils and will always be fondly remembered by the Old Trafford faithful.

4. Wayne Rooney

Premier League appearances for United: 393
Goals: 183

Man Utd’s all-time record goalscorer, the second top goalscorer in Premier League history and England’s all-time leading goalscorer, Rooney only makes it into fourth spot on this list.

The Liverpool-born forward is unquestionably one of United’s greatest ever players.

3. Fernando Torres

Premier League appearances for Liverpool: 102
Goals: 65

The Torres who joined Liverpool was not the same Torres who left Liverpool, but what an outstanding striker the Spaniard was at his peak.

Is third place a little generous, though?

2. Luis Suarez

Premier League appearances for Liverpool: 110
Goals: 69

In terms of pure talent, Suarez is probably Liverpool’s greatest striker of the Premier League era.

The Uruguayan scored all types of goals and provided Reds with some unforgettable memories.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Premier League appearances for United: 196
Goals: 84

And in first place, it’s Ronaldo.

It’s easy to forget that the Portuguese forward’s first three seasons at Old Trafford were frustrating and often difficult, but his final couple of years as a Man Utd players were exceptional.

What he’s achieved since leaving Manchester is almost beyond belief - and this has helped him to take top spot as the greatest Man Utd or Liverpool striker of the Premier League era.
