Manchester United put in a spirited performance and were minutes away from earning all three points against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Marcus Rashford's goal gave the hosts the lead but Adam Lallana's 85th-minute equaliser meant the game finished 1-1 and the points were shared.

With regular starters like Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard still injured, and Anthony Martial only fit enough for the bench, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deployed a new formation.

The Man Utd manager fielded five at the back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ashley Young as wing-backs and Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Marcos Rojo in central defence.

Maguire has looked like a good signing for the Red Devils so far this term, however Rafael van der Vaart blasted the £80 million man during the draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Maguire's United career so far

United brought in Maguire from Leicester City for a fee which eclipsed Virgil van Dijk's £75 million move to Liverpool and made him the world's most expensive defender.

The England international has looked fairly accomplished in his first few months as a Man United player, despite the team's overall struggles, and he's already become a leader in the team.

Maguire has developed an understanding with Lindelof and is certainly an improvement on Phil Jones and Chris Smalling - the latter being loaned out to Roma for the 2019-20 campaign.

Van der Vaart destroys Maguire

Rafa van der Vaart is 36-years-old now but he's played for clubs like Ajax, Real Madrid and Tottenham and was a lovely playmaker in his prime.

The attacking midfielder appeared on Dutch television during Man Utd 1-1 Liverpool and strongly criticised Maguire, comparing United's summer signing to Sunday League quality.

"When I go to see an amateur club on Sunday, I can find three players who can play like him (Maguire). I mean that," claimed Van der Vaart

The Dutchman, who played over 100 times for his country, continued: "It might be silly to say it, but he won’t hear it anyway.

"We are talking about a €90 million (£80 million) signing here. (If Maguire is worth €90 million) then Van Dijk is worth €300 million (£258 million).”

Is Van der Vaart right or wrong?

While Man Utd ended up paying considerably more than they wanted to for Maguire, is the centre-back really as poor as Van der Vaart is making out?

The 26-year-old reads the game well, gets his head on pretty much everything, he's comfortable stepping into midfield and he organises the defence for both club and country.

Plus, per Statman Dave, Maguire produced ten clearances against Liverpool (twice as many as any other player on the pitch) and looked solid.
