GB's women led the way at this weekend's European Track Cycling event in the Netherlands, bringing home two golds and a silver.

Laura Kenny won her 13th world title as she and her fellow GB team pursuit cyclists won gold at this weekend’s European Track Championships.

The women’s team pursuit outfit won gold on the second day of the competition in Apeldoorn, whilst 22-year-old Emily Nelson won GB's first gold in the Madison on the first day of competition.

Nelson said: “I started my sprint a couple of laps earlier than I usually would, but I knew I wanted to lead out rather than try to get around other riders.

"I’m really happy with the jersey, especially with it being my first elite European title."

The women's pursuit quartet of Laura Kenny, Katie Archibald, Neah Evans and Ellie Dickinson produced a dominant performance in the pursuit final against their German opponents. The team won the contest emphatically by almost three seconds.

To top off the competition, Laura Kenny and her Madison teammate, Katie Archibald, won silver on the final day in Apeldoorn.

The pair started the Madison event strongly, earning maximum points in the first two sprints. A missed changeover, however, on sprint number four meant they missed out on putting points on the board. They came back valiantly but failed to close the gap and held on to second place, two points behind eventual winners Denmark.

After the competition, Archibald spoke of the toll the event had taken.

"I’m exhausted – we put everything into that.

"I’ve got stuff to work on personally and we’ve got ways we can improve as a team, so while I wish we had scored those two more points for gold, I still feel optimistic about future races.”
