Patrice Evra explains why he always chooses Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi

Real Madrid v Barcelona - La Liga

Cristiano Ronaldo is already looking ahead to notching his 800th career goal after making it 701 in in Juventus’ 2-1 win against Bologna on Saturday.

The Portuguese’s numbers in front of goal are truly incredible. Only five others players have hit 700 goals and there’s every chance that Ronaldo will surpass Josef Bican’s record of 805 goals when all is said and done.

And then there are the individual honours.

Ronaldo has five Ballon d’Ors to his name, tied with Lionel Messi for the most by a player.

He’s been featured in FIFA’s FIFPro World11 in every year since 2007 and has been named Player of the Year in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A.

The 34-year-old has reached the latter stages of his career but remains a joy to watch.

It will be a long time before another player reaches such a level through sheer hard work and desire.

Ronaldo made his name at Manchester United, where his former teammates still enjoy raving about a player they watched develop into a superstar.

He arrived at Old Trafford as a fresh-faced teenager in 2003 and was a Ballon d’Or winner five years later, capturing his first Golden Ball after leading Man United to Champions League glory.

And soon after claiming the prize, Ronaldo made a vow to win at least four more to teammate Patrice Evra.

Evra made an appearance on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, where he was asked if he was surprised by Ronaldo’s phenomenal career.

“I'm not," Evra responded, per the Mirror.

"I remember when we were talking with Cristiano when he won his first Ballon d'Or, he talked to me and said 'I have to win at least five', and that's what he did, so I'm not surprised."

Eleven years on and Ronaldo has achieved his goal. He celebrated his fifth Ballon d'Or in 2017 after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League for a 12th time.

Evra wasn't done with raving about the Portugal international, explaining why he always chooses him in the debate with Lionel Messi.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is the most professional player I ever played with. He was the one that if we had training at 10, he would be there at 8," Evra added.

"He was the last to leave the training ground, practicing his skill.

"That's why, when we compare him to Messi, I always choose Cristiano and people say it's just because he's my friend.

"I just think Messi, it's just a gift, it's talent. God said, 'go on, go and play with those kids'.

"But Cristiano worked so hard. He's a machine.

"He doesn't want to lose anything. He even wants to be the most beautiful guy, he wants to be the one that is dressing the best.”

Ronaldo has got something of a superfan in Evra.
