The shortlist for the 2019 Ballon d'Or was announced on Monday night.

A total of 30 players have been nominated for the award, including the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.

While those three are no surprise, a number of interesting names have made it onto the list.

Not many expected to see Hugo Lloris, Donny van de Beek and Marquinhos all up for the prize.

While much of the attention has rightly been on the footballers who made the cut, there's still a bit of debate over the most notable snub from this year's list - Neymar.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger is regarded by many fans as the third-best player in the world, behind Messi and Ronaldo.

But France Football, the publication that presents the Ballon d'Or, omitted him from their shortlist this year and have even detailed eight reasons for doing so.

Their journalists claim that 2019 was a 'terrible year' for Neymar - check out the timeline they've detailed of his issues below:

January 23 - Metatarsal injury
March 6 - Abusing match official after Man Utd match
April 27 - Pushing a supporter
June 6 - Ankle injury ahead of Copa America
August 9 - Cleared of rape allegation
Transfer window - Failed move to Barcelona
September 14 - Jeered by PSG fans
October 13 - Another injury on international duty

As you can see, France Football have detailed the Brazilian's issues both on and off the pitch, as reasons for leaving him off the Ballon d'Or shortlist.

To be fair, Neymar didn't exactly cover himself in glory by abusing a match official and pushing a supporter at the end of last season.

But the three injuries and failed transfer to Barcelona were out of his control, so it's perhaps unfair to hold that against him.

Still, there's always next year, Neymar.
