Manchester United suffered the darkest day in their Premier League history eight years ago today.

On October 23, 2011, Manchester City travelled to Old Trafford and smashed their rivals 6-1.

Mario Balotelli scored the game's first two goals, before Sergio Aguero made it 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining.

Darren Fletcher's goal gave United hope of a miraculous comeback with 10 minutes to go but they ended up being embarrassed.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men threw players forward but they were made to pay.

City would go on to score three goals in stoppage time - two from Edin Dzeko and one from David Silva - to inflict United's worst defeat at home since 1955.

Eight years after that game, we've taken a look at the starting lineups that day and listed what happened to them.

Manchester City:

GK: Joe Hart

Hart rose to the top of world football but would fall spectacularly.

He lost his place in 2016 and was shipped out to Torino on loan.

Pep Guardiola didn't trust him as his number one either and Hart eventually left on a permanent deal to Burnley. He's now their backup goalkeeper.

RB: Micah Richards

Richards was a talented youngster but injuries curtailed his career.

After playing just twice in his last three seasons for Aston Villa, he finally retired in the summer.

CB: Vincent Kompany

Possibly the best player in Manchester City's history finally left the club this summer. He's now player/manager at Anderlecht.

CB: Joleon Lescott

Lescott left for West Brom in 2014 and went on to play for Aston Villa and AEK Athens. He retired after a short spell with Sunderland in 2017.

LB: Gael Clichy

Clichy left Man City in 2017 after six seasons with the club for İstanbul Başakşehir, where he's still playing today.

MF: James Milner

Milner left the club for Liverpool on a free transfer in 2015. Now 33, he's still an important player for Jurgen Klopp's side.

MF: Gareth Barry

Barry left on loan for Everton in 2013 and he joined the Toffees permanently a year later.

He went on to join West Brom in 2017 and would retire from professional football last year.

MF: David Silva

What a player. Silva is likely to leave the club at the end of the season after nine incredible seasons.

MF: Yaya Toure

Toure stayed at City for seven more seasons before leaving in 2018.

He went on to play for Olympiacos and then retired after a spell with Qingdao Huanghai.

ST: Mario Balotelli

The controversial Italian footballer famously unveiled his 'Why Always Me?' T-shirt after scoring.

His form declined rapidly the next season and he would leave in the summer of 2013 for AC Milan.

He's since played for Liverpool, Nice, Marseille and now plays in Serie A with Brescia.

ST: Sergio Aguero

Eight years later and Aguero is still at the top of world football.

He's been one of the best strikers in his generation, having scored 241 goals in 348 games.

Manchester United:

GK: David de Gea

The Spaniard soon emerged into one of the best goalkeepers in the world and recently signed a new contract at the club.

DF: Patrice Evra

The fan favourite left the club in 2014 for Juventus. He retired from football after unsuccessful spells with Marseille and West Ham.

DF: Rio Ferdinand

Ferdinand's power were on the wane in 2011. He stayed three more years at United before joining QPR.

He lasted just one season at the club and is now working as a pundit for BT Sport.

DF: Jonny Evans

Given United's problems at centre-back in recent times, they may regret selling Evans to West Brom in 2015.

Evans went on to join Leicester City in 2018 and is thriving with the Foxes.

DF: Chris Smalling

Man United fans complained about Smalling for years and he finally left the club on loan to Roma this summer. A permanent move away beckons.

MF: Anderson

Anderson never fulfilled his potential and left for Internacional in 2015.

He retired in September after a spell with Adana Demirspor.

MF: Nani

Nani left in 2015 for Fenerbahce and has since played for Valencia, Lazio and Sporting Lisbon.

He's now in MLS with Orlando City, where he's scored 12 goals in 33 games in 2019.

MF: Ashley Young

Young is now the club captain at Man United, much to many of their fans' bemusement.

MF: Darren Fletcher

Fletcher battled Ulcerative colitis in the years after 2011 and lost his regular place in the side.

The dependable Scotsman left for West Brom in 2014 before retiring from football last year with Stoke City.

ST: Wayne Rooney

Rooney's 13 season spell with United came to an end in 2017 when he re-joined Everton.

He left for D.C. United a year later and, after two seasons with the club, will join Derby County as a player/coach in January.

ST: Danny Welbeck

Welbeck was a promising youngster in 2011 but injured have derailed his career.

He struggled for fitness in five seasons with Arsenal and is now having the same problems at Watford.
