Manchester United's re-build isn't quite done, it's safe to say.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are sitting in 14th place after their draw at home to Liverpool at the weekend.

This is despite a summer in which United brought in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire for considerable fees.

Daniel James arrived, too - although, for a lot less money - and while some was offset with Romelu Lukaku's move to Internazionale, United still spent a big chunk of change.

But there's been little return, thus far, as seen by their less-than-stellar league position.

And so, United need some more work and it likely won't come cheap.

They may have found the next piece of the puzzle, however, according to reports.

The Manchester Evening News claims that United are 'optimistic' of signing Leicester City's James Maddison next summer.

And they've got two very good reasons to believe that, too.

Firstly, Maddison is supposedly very good friends with Maguire, who joined from the Foxes in the summer.

Secondly, the 22-year-old apparently grew up as a United fan - something you'd imagine would play a key part in any move.

Maddison certainly wouldn't come cheap, though.

Maguire cost a world-record fee for a defender, of course, and Maddison would cost far more, the way things are going.

For one thing, Maddison is a couple of years younger than Maguire, while he also plays in a position that usually commands higher fees.

Add in that third-place Leicester may be a Champions League side next season, and suddenly there's little reason for them to entertain fees even in Maguire's range.

Maddison would also need to meet Solskjaer's 'signing criteria', according to the MEN.

That involves making sure that any new player fits the right personality mould for United, including their desire to dress properly and sign autographs, while remaining 'respectful and humble'.
