An obscene banner of Divock Origi was unveiled by Liverpool supporters at Genk’s Luminus Arena ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash. The banner depicted a mocked-up naked Origi with an abnormally large penis stood next to the Champions League trophy.Origi, who played a starring role for the Reds during last season’s Champions League knockout stages, was named among the substitutes for the Genk clash. The banner in question was removed from the away end by security inside the stadium approximately 30 minutes before kick off.And a spokesperson for Liverpool has condemned the banner as ‘highly offensive’, with those responsible for bringing it inside the stadium now at risk of being punished.

Per the Daily Mail, the spokesperson said: “The banner is highly offensive and inappropriate.

“We condemn its use at the game tonight and sought to have it removed as soon as we became aware.

“We will look to identify those responsible for bringing it into the stadium and act accordingly.”

A later statement from a Liverpool spokesperson, per the Mirror, added: "Liverpool Football Club condemns the offensive banner displayed in our section of the ground, prior to kick-off.

"To be clear, the image used perpetuated a racist stereotype. This is completely unacceptable.

"We acted swiftly to have the banner removed and we are now working with the local authorities and stadium team in Genk to identify those responsible.

"Any subsequent action will be taken in keeping with our sanctions process."

“Chants referencing the size of the manhood of black footballer's have been used for the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba in the past,” the Mirror state in their report.

And with racism in football such a hot topic at the moment, the timing of this latest incident seems even more baffling.
