Despite making the Champions League in each of the last two seasons, Liverpool never make it easy for themselves in the group stage.

During the 2017/18 campaign, they only managed to win three of their group matches, drawing the other three. It did see them top a relatively easy group consisting of Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor.

The campaign ended with defeat against Real Madrid in the final in Kiev.

Jurgen Klopp’s side may have won the competition last season but they scraped through their group consisting of Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade on goal difference after winning three and losing three.

So, when they lost 2-0 to Napoli in their opening group stage game this season, alarm bells must have been ringing.

Those alarm bells would have been ringing even louder when they allowed Red Bull Salzburg to come back from 3-0 down to make it 3-3 at Anfield in their second group game. Fortunately, a Mohamed Salah goal sealed a 4-3 win.

So you couldn’t blame Liverpool fans if they travelled to Genk with a bit of trepidation - especially as they hadn’t recorded a group stage away win since October 2017.

But the travelling Kop would have been delighted with a comfortable 4-1 win on Wednesday - well, those that made it to Genk anyway.

That’s because two Liverpool fans travelled to GENT rather than GENK.

Just 30 minutes before kick-off, they realised their mistake but were unable to make the two-hour journey in time for kick-off.

Instead, they decided to watch the match in a local Irish pub.

The two fans had paid €150 on a train ticket and €70 for a match ticket.

There’s a silver lining, though. Gent have invited them to watch tonight’s Europa League clash against Wolfsburg if they’re still around.

But Gent couldn’t resist a sly dig at them by following that up with: “We’ll give them some lessons on Belgian geography afterwards”
