It was another difficult night for Manchester United as they limped to a tepid 1-0 win over Partizan on Thursday.

For the second successive European fixture, the Red Devils failed to register even a single shot on target from open play with their winner coming courtesy of an Anthony Martial penalty.

There is no questioning that the club are wading through an alarming crisis of creativity and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is floundering as he tries to solve it.

With the Manchester giants languishing just two points above the relegation zone on the domestic front, Solskjaer would have been hoping for a confidence-boosting win in Europe.

However, their trip to Belgrade turned into yet another slog as the very real cracks in the side were highlighted yet again.

While they did manage to keep a clean sheet - which of course is a massive positive - their lack of forward going imagination will continue to scupper their progress.

Speaking on BT Sport after United's snore-fest in Serbia, club legend Paul Scholes suggested the Red Devils should consider extending an olive branch to Arsenal's Mesut Ozil.

The German midfielder has strangely fallen out of favour at the Gunners and would possibly be open to an escape from his north London nightmare.

"I can’t understand that (Ozil's situation at Arsenal). I think he’s a player that can link a team together," said Scholes.

"I think he’s got great quality, he’s shown that in his career, he could be an answer short term, I don’t know. I think that would be up to him.

"I can’t see it happening but I think he is a player that United could do with right now."

Scholesy may have a point.

With the exception of Paul Pogba - who has been trying to leave the club for months - United's midfield is running frighteningly low on threat.

A player of Ozil's proven quality could be just what they need to get their season back on track and kick start a march up the table in 2020.

However, it must be remembered that Ozil is on obscene wages at the Emirates and probably wouldn't want to make the switch.

Perhaps it might be wise to learn from history too - we all remember what happened the last time United made a high profile signing from Arsenal.

Does anyone know if Mesut plays the piano?
