Lionel Messi’s critics so often bring up his record with the Argentinian national team when pointing out why he shouldn’t be considered football’s greatest ever player.

Messi has been a loser in four finals with La Albiceleste, including three Copa America finals and one World Cup final.

And his most recent failure, losing to Chile in the Copa America final in 2016, clearly impacted Messi, for he promptly called time on his international career.

The Barcelona star returned to don the blue and white stripes but it was clear that Messi’s inability to win with Argentina was hurting him.

He’s 32 now and it’s very possible that he will go his entire career without winning a major trophy with his country.

His success on the international stage is in stark contrast to his accomplishments at club level. Messi has won a club-record 34 trophies with Barcelona, including 10 La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.

But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner insists he wouldn’t swap that haul for one World Cup trophy.

“I would’ve loved to be a world champion. But I don’t think I would change anything else in my career to be one,” Messi told TyC Sports, per Goal.

"This is what I was given, what God gave me. It is what it is.

"I couldn't dream of everything that I experienced after. It was far bigger than anything I could've imagined."

Back in 2014, Messi had the chance to silence all his critics by leading Argentina to World Cup glory.

But Alejandro Sabella’s side came up short, losing 1-0 to Germany in the final after the game went to extra-time.

Two years later, Messi was left in tears after missing a penalty in their shootout defeat to Chile in their Copa America final defeat.

It’s been a rather painful journey for Messi but many people are rooting for him to triumph with his country before he hangs up his boots.
