Just over 10 years ago, Liverpool were on the wrong end of one of the strangest goals in Premier League history.

On October 17 2009, Darren Bent's goal saw Sunderland defeat the Reds at the Stadium of Light.

But that doesn't tell the full story.

That's because he had a big helping hand, and from an unlikely source.

A fan from the Liverpool end threw a beach ball onto the pitch during play.

The beach ball stayed on the pitch and was in the Liverpool box when Sunderland attacked.

Darren Bent tried his luck and it looked as if his effort would easily be saved by Pepe Reina, only for the beach ball to get into the way.

And, in a huge slick of luck for Sunderland (and a huge slice of misfortune for Liverpool), the ball changed direction, bamboozled Reina and went into the net.

On the back of that goal, Sky Sports have decided to take a look at the 'strangest goals in Premier League history'.

And here's what they've come up with...

We've decided to rank them in order of how bizarre they were.

11. YOUL MAWENE | DERBY vs Southampton | November 17, 2001

A Southampton player booted the ball miles up in the air, which the goalkeeper thought was going over the bar.

But the ball landed in play to Mawene, who tapped in from a yard.

It was a bizarre goal but more of a misjudgement by the goalkeeper.

10. THIERRY HENRY | ARSENAL vs Fulham | February 23, 2002

Henry found himself in the right place at the right time.

The Frenchman didn't know much about it as the ball rebounded off him from close range. A fine assist from the post.

9. DIVOCK ORIGI | LIVERPOOL vs Everton | December 2, 2018

The most recent bizarre goal in the Premier League.

Virgil van Dijk actually turned away in disgust when his audacious effort when miles up in the air.

But it landed on the top of the bar, bounced again, and then fell to a grateful Origi to score a last-minute winner against his side's bitter rivals.

8. PETER ENCKELMAN (OG) | Birmingham vs ASTON VILLA | September 16, 2002

Enckelman made a disastrous error in his side's biggest game of the season.

Olof Mellberg decided to throw the ball back to his 'keeper but Enckelman misjudged it entirely.

The ball scraped the bottom of his studs and went into the net. What a shocker.

7. THOMAS BROLIN | Sheffield Wednesday vs LEEDS | December 16, 1995

Brolin was on the floor when a defender booted the ball at him and went into the net.

He then ran off celebrating as if he scored a screamer.

6. MICHAIL ANTONIO | WEST HAM vs Southampton | December 28, 2015

Very similar to Brolin's goal.

Antonio looked to have overrun the ball, leading to him stumbling over in the box.

A Southampton player tried to hoof it clear but it hit Antonio and lopped the 'keeper.

5. PAUL ROBINSON | TOTTENHAM vs Watford | March 17, 2007

How often do you see goalkeepers score? Let alone from their own-half?

Robinson's long kick deceived Ben Foster as it bounced over him and into the net. A moment Robinson will never forget.

4. STAN COLLYMORE | Blackburn vs LIVERPOOL | February 24, 1996

You won't see a goal ilke this nowadays as the quality of pitches have improved massively.

Collymore's pea roller took a massive bobble in the box and made Tim Flowers look silly.

Collymore looked around almost in embarrassment.

3. JARI LITMANEN | Aston Villa vs LIVERPOOL | December 26, 2001

What an assist from the referee.

Peter Schmeichel through the ball out quickly as he looked to hit Liverpool on the counter.

But his throw hit the referee and bounced to Litmanen, who had the easy task of rolling the ball into an empty net.

2. JASON CUNDY | Ipswich vs TOTTENHAM | August 30, 1992

Cundy was just looking to clear the ball, but it ended up flying into the top corner.

1. DARREN BENT | SUNDERLAND vs Liverpool | October 17, 2009

Bent's goal will likely never be beaten. The strangest goal in Premier League history with a shadow of a doubt.
