Jack Rodwell could be about to complete one of the most bizarre transfers in recent times.

The Englishman is currently without a club after playing just 22 times in the Championship for Blackburn last season.

But, despite his fall from grace, he could be about to sign for one of Europe's best clubs.

That's because Italian giants Roma want to make him their new signing.

The 28-year-old, who has endured a injury plagued career, passed a medical earlier this week and is expected to sign.

It would be up there with the weirdest signings of 2019. But what has been the weirdest signing every year since 2005?

HITC Sport recently answered that question and here is who they named...

2005 - Bolton sign Hidetoshi Nakata

Nakata is one of the best Asian footballers of all-time.

In 2001, he signed for Parma for €28.4 million and would go on to win Serie A with the club.

However, just four years later and at the age of 28, he decided to link up with Sam Allardyce at Bolton.

He played 32 times for Bolton before retiring from football.

2006 - West Ham sign Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano

Tevez and Mascherano were coveted by Europe's top clubs after appearing for Argentina in the 2006 Word Cup.

But it was eventually West Ham who won the race for their signatures.

They would prove to be inspired signings as they helped them miraculously survive the drop.

The duo only lasted a season at the club, with Tevez joining Manchester United and Mascherano joining Liverpool a year after joining.

2007 - Michael Chopra to Sunderland

Chopra grew up in Newcastle and played for his boyhood club between 1993-2006.

But he shocked everyone when he decided to join their bitter rivals, Sunderland, a year after leaving.

2008 - Tyrone Mears to Marseille

Mears had struggled since joining West Ham for £1 million in 2006. He was shipped out on loan to Derby County the following season.

Mears played 26 times as Derby only mustered 11 points in the Premier League.

However, French giants Marseille decided to sign him on loan in a truly bizarre signing. Mears went on to play in the UEFA Cup for his new side.

2009 - Julien Faubert to Real Madrid

Faubert signed for West Ham in 2007 but failed to score in his first 32 games for the club.

But, for some reason, Real Madrid decided to sign him on loan in January 2009. He would make just two appearances for Los Blancos.

2010 - Bebe to Manchester United

One of the most bizarre signings ever. Bebe had only played 26 times in Portugal's third tier before Manchester United signing him for €7 million.

He made just seven appearances for the Red Devils and left four years later.

2011 - Dale Jennings to Bayern Munich

The 18-year-old went from playing for Tranmere in League One to signing for one of the world's biggest clubs.

He never made an appearance for Bayern's first team and was sold two years later. He's now at Runcorn Town.

2012 - Edgar Davids to Barnet Town

Davids was one of the best midfielders in the world throughout the 2000s, playing for the likes of Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus.

But at the age of 39 he decided to play in League Two with Barnet. Strange.

2013 - Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich

Bayern actually announced the signing from their Bundesliga rivals, Dortmund, in April 2013.

A month later, the two sides played each other in the Champions League final. Bizarre timing.

2014 - Radamel Falcao to Manchester United

Falcao, who had missed the majority of the 2013/14 season through injury, signed for Man United on loan in 2014.

United already had Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck but still decided to strengthen their attack rather than focusing on their defence.

He would go on to score just four times for the club.

2015 - Serge Gnabry to West Brom

The signing of Gnabry wasn't that weird, but Tony Pulis' treatment of him was.

Gnabry would play just three times for the club as he was relegated to the reserves.

The German winger later got his opportunity at Werder Bremen and is now thriving at Bayern.

2016 - Steven Caulker to Liverpool

Caulker was failing to get into Southampton's side when Jurgen Klopp decided to sign him for the Reds.

He only played four times for Liverpool and would soon find himself playing for Dundee FC.

2017 - Fabio Borini to AC Milan

The Italian scored just twice for Sunderland in 2016/17.

A year later he was rewarded with a move to Italian giants AC Milan.

2018 - Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to PSG

Choupo-Moting was relegated from the Premier League with Stoke in 2017/18 but would sign for PSG just a few months later.

He went from playing alongside Mame Biram Diouf and Ramadan Sobhi to Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

2019 - Kevin Prince Boateng to Barcelona on loan

Barcelona needed a striker in January, so who would they turn to?

They were linked with some big names but went for Boateng, who wasn't exactly setting Serie A alight with Sassuolo.

Boateng struggled at Barca and returned to his parent club having made just four appearances.
