Wayne Rooney has returned to England ahead of taking up his player-coach role at Derby County in January.

The former Manchester United striker will join the Rams on an initial 18-month contract following two years at DC United.

With two years left on his deal with the Washington club, Rooney opted to move on after a 5-1 extra-time defeat to Toronto in the first round of the MLS play-offs last Saturday.

Despite not winning any silverware in the United States, he ended his time there with 23 goals and 15 assists in 48 regular-season appearances.

As for whether the second-highest goalscorer in Premier League history can be as prolific in the Championship, we’ll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, Rooney’s homecoming is also significant for the eldest of his four sons.

Kai Rooney - whom Manchester City snapped up while his dad was playing at Old Trafford in 2016 - is set to be taken back by the Premier League champions, per the Mirror.

The nine-year-old was considered a talented prospect during his stint with the Citizens’ youth academy before his dad’s move to the MLS forced his departure.

However, Kai was reportedly told a place in City’s youth academy would be waiting for him upon his family’s return from the US.

Well, with the Rooney clan now back on British soil, the Sky Blues are free to make their move.

Depending on how far Kai’s football career goes, it would certainly be strange to see the Rooney name on the back of a City shirt.

If that happened, the fact he was once on the books at Carrington would add insult to injury.

Wayne, along with most Red Devils fans, would surely prefer Kai to follow in his footsteps at Everton or United.

Such a career path would come with significant pressure, though with his genes, he probably has a better chance than most of making it in the professional game.
