South Africa edged their way past Wales 19-16 to cement a place in the final of the 2019 Rugby World Cup where they will meet England.

A huge reason they find themselves in contention for the big prize next Saturday is because of Handre Pollard’s kicking.

The fly-half amassed 14 points to book the Springboks’ date with England, picking up the player of the match for his efforts.

The 25-year-old has already made it a World Cup to remember on a personal note after becoming the leading Springbok point scorer in the tournament’s history.

Pollard, who plays his club rugby in France for Montpellier, entered the tournament in third place on the all-time South African point scorers’ chart.

His eight points against New Zealand in South Africa’s first game was enough to take him into second place, leapfrogging Jannie de Beer who has 97 points to his name.

He then had his eyes on Percy Montgomery’s 111 point record, a total he surpassed in South Africa’s 49-3 victory over Italy.

After his heroics in the semi-final, Pollard has now amassed 140 points, which will almost certainly be added to next Saturday.

Remarkably, despite now holding the record as the leading scorer for South Africa, he has never scored a World Cup try.

Although this is a bizarre statistic, given the way he’s been kicking we doubt it keeps him up at night.

Pollard’s 140 points puts him in joint seventh position on the all-time World Cup scorers along with Scottish legend Chris Paterson.

England’s Jonny Wilkinson remains at the summit of point scorers in World Cup history with 277.

Whether Pollard can challenge him is yet to be seen, but the Springboks will be going into the final knowing that they can trust their number 10’s right boot.
