When Granit Xhaka’s No. 34 went up on the electronic substitutes board in the 61st-minute during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, nobody could have predicted what was about to happen.Nine minutes previously, the home fans had seen their 2-0 lead wiped out after Jordan Ayew’s equaliser. So when the club captain slowly walked off the pitch, Gooners showed their displeasure by booing him. That only prompted Xhaka to cup his ears and encourage the fans to boo louder. That was before telling the supporters to ‘f*ck off.’

Wow.

While we all know what Arsenal fans thought of the whole situation, what did the players think?

Well, famous Arsenal photographer Stuart MacFarlane captured Lucas Torreira’s reaction when the fans were booing their captain - and he was quite emotional.

MacFarlane tweeted three images that he taken of Torreira looking physically upset with the caption: “Didn't want to post these pictures but felt I had to. This is Lucas Torreira's emotional reaction to the abuse Granit Xhaka received after his substitution, in tears and inconsolable. Absolute love and respect for his captain.”

That suggests that Xhaka has the backing of some players at least.

While the Swiss may have the backing of Torreira, it seems Alexandre Lacazette isn’t quite in the same boat.

The Frenchman was caught ‘liking’ an Instagram post which read: “I’m sorry, I’m done with this now. You can’t be 2-0 up at home to Palace and draw. Emery I’ve backed you bro, enough is enough. Xhaka can f*ck himself as well. Never wanna see him in an Arsenal to again!”

Oh dear.
