Unai Emery spent months deciding who was going to be Arsenal’s captain. It was a drawn-out process which was eventually decided by the players casting a vote. The result?Granit Xhaka would be first choice with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil making up the five-man captaincy group. But one month to the day that the results were revealed, Emery may have a decision to make regarding the armband.

Xhaka was booed off the pitch by Arsenal fans against Crystal Palace before he told them to ‘f*ck off’.

In the opinion of many, that’s enough for Xhaka to be stripped of the armband.

But what the midfielder is reported to have done after being substituted could possibly be even worse.

According to Amy Lawrence in The Athletic, “some sources claim he left the ground before the game even finished.”

If that’s true, that’s outrageous.

The report also reveals that "three senior players went to visit Xhaka" at his home to offer support.

Lawrence does admit that a club spokesman couldn’t verify that Xhaka left the stadium before full-time but it’s not like they would admit to their captain storming out of the Emirates before the conclusion of the game, is it?

Especially with the match in the balance.

Xhaka was substituted in the 61st-minute shortly after Crystal Palace had made it 2-2.

With half an hour remaining, the match was up for grabs it what was an important 90 minutes as the Gunners attempt to finish in the Premier League’s top-four.

Instead, Arsenal dropped two points leaving them four points adrift of Leicester and Chelsea, who occupy third and fourth respectively.
