The contrasting fortunes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur could not be starker right now. The Reds enjoyed 21 shots and nearly 70% possession as they beat their fellow Champions League finalists 2-1 at Anfield. Had it not been for Paolo Gazzaniga, who made more saves in a Premier League game than any other goalkeeper since David de Gea in 2017, it could have been a lot worse for Spurs.Yet football is a game of margins, narrow ones at that. It might have been different, Harry Kane heading the visitors into a shock lead after just 47 seconds. Son Heung-min's miss then proved pivotal when Jordan Henderson equalised and Mo Salah sealed the three points from the spot.

Kane's battle with Virgil van Dijk was always going to be a fascinating one.

Within a minute, it looked as if the England captain was having the last laugh as the Dutchman played him onside for his goal.

From then on, as Tottenham sat back, it was ultimately the centre-back who will have gone home happy.

“Van Dijk is a great defender but he is not invincible and Liverpool are not invincible,” Kane had said before the game, via the Guardian.

Kane famously destroyed the Ballon d'Or nominee when Spurs were at their very best against Southampton.

But it's fair to say he's a completely different animal now. Van Dijk kept Kane relatively quiet as Liverpool battled their way back into the game.

With Liverpool trailing, he made a superb tackle which saw him win the ball but simultaneously leave Kane on the floor.

More harrowing memories from that famous night in Madrid on June 1...

The anonymous performances of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli didn't help the striker either.

Tottenham are experiencing their worst start under Mauricio Pochettino, taking just 12 points from their opening 10 games.

The Argentine has now beaten Jurgen Klopp just once in 11 attempts. And let's take a moment to look at the two side's respective line-ups in that 4-1 triumph at Wembley just two years ago this month.

Eight Spurs players that started on that occasion were in Pochettino's XI again yesterday. As for Liverpool, only Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah, and Jordan Henderson started both games.

They've completely revamped the squad and a six-point lead at the top of the table is testament to that.
