Granit Xhaka did not exactly cover himself in glory on Sunday afternoon.

The Arsenal captain's response to boo's from the Emirates faithful as he made his way from the field was nothing short of disgraceful.

The Swiss could find himself in a spot of bother in the coming days with the club expected to act upon his awful behaviour.

Well, having ranked the lot of them, it seems that Xhaka just misses out on the wooden spoon.

So, without further ado, here are Arsenal's Premier League era captains, ranked from best to worst:

11. William Gallas

The less said about Gallas the better.

Most fans didn't even want the former Chelsea man as their captain and it was no surprise when Arsene Wenger stripped him of the armband following a string of controversial incidents.

Who can forget the French defender sitting on the turf at St. Andrews having a proper sulk?

Dreadful.

10. Granit Xhaka

Again, no one wanted him as captain and his behaviour on Sunday justifies the outcry that followed his coronation.

He might not be captain for too much longer, mind.

9. Laurent Koscielny

As a captain, Koscielny wasn't all that bad -when he managed to get on the field.

However, his refusal to travel on Arsenal's pre-season tour to force a move away from the club burnt all his bridges in north London.

He then danced on the ashes when he removed an Arsenal shirt to reveal a Bordeaux shirt hidden underneath in an awful social media post.

8. Robin van Persie

Having served the north London side so well for so many years, Van Persie seemed the natural choice when it came to replace Cesc Fabregas.

After one pretty successful season though, he jumped ship for fierce rivals Manchester United and soured all the fond memories Arsenal fans may have had of him.

7. Thomas Vermaelen

Spent most of his time as captain in the physio room or watching on from the bench - not great, but not awful.

6. Per Mertesacker

The giant German loved Arsenal and could never be accused of giving less than 100%.

He even won an FA Cup during his stint but injury curtailed his Arsenal career and he retired a year later.

5. Mikel Arteta

Arteta's career was in it's twilight years when he was handed the armband at the Emirates but that didn't stop him from doing a fine job for the club.

He was a superb influence in the dressing room and was able to rally the team brilliantly.

It showed as the Gunners went on to lift two FA Cups under his captaincy before he retired to join Pep Guardiola's backroom staff.

4. Cesc Fabregas

The Spanish maestro was just 21 when he was given the responsibility of captaining the north London side - the second youngest skipper in the club's history.

It seemed he relished the challenge though,  growing from strength to strength in the Gunners midfield.

He left with the blessing of the Arsenal faithful when he signed for Barcelona but a later move to Chelsea left a sour taste in their mouths.

3. Thierry Henry

A true Arsenal legend.

Henry captained the side to the 2006 Champions League final, narrowly missing out on becoming the first Arsenal skipper to lift that famous trophy.

He became the all-time leading scorer while captain before signing for Barcelona in 2007.

2. Patrick Viera

The captain of the Invincibles - what more do we need to say?

Viera was one of the greatest midfielders to pull on an Arsenal shirt and truly one the finest captain's the club has ever seen.

Taking over from Tony Adams was no easy task but Viera was never overawed, stamping his own mark on that famous team.

1. Tony Adams

Imagine how big Tony felt watching Xhaka last night?

The towering defender oversaw one of the most successful periods in the club's history, winning two First Division titles, two Premier League trophies, three FA Cups, two League Cups and one European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Adams was also handed the captaincy at the tender age of 21 but was never daunted by the task.

He led from the back and redefined what it meant to be a captain.

Without question, the greatest leader the club has ever had.
