Granit Xhaka's relationship with Arsenal fans has hit an all-time low.The midfielder risks being stripped of the captaincy following his reaction to being substituted during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. The Gunners threw away a two-goal lead, but addressing the issues that led to that might be quite low on Unai Emery's Monday to-do list.Where on earth does his skipper go from here? Xhaka's appointment was divisive to begin with. Since he has continued to put in poor performances, the Emirates faithful have been in uproar at his wearing of the armband.

Emery's decision to bring the Swiss international off with half an hour to go was cheered by thousands of fans, who promptly started booing him as he drudged off the pitch.

While that will have been a painful experience, there's no excuse for his reaction.

Xhaka stormed down the tunnel and threw his shirt on the floor - but not before he'd cupped his ear to the crowd and told them to "f*** off". Incredible scenes.

In his dressing down when he returns to training, he might well argue he was provoked.

The 27-year-old has taken plenty of flak on social media and there aren't many fanbases who openly abuse their own captain.

Arsenal fans, of course, pay an awful lot of money for the er... privilege of watching their team. Many season tickets cost over £1000, rivalled only by Spurs as the most expensive in England.

Some may feel that gives them a free pass to boo, jeer, and heckle as they please. These are professional footballers, after all.

However, it's alleged that Arsenal supporters went too far after the game.

The Evening Standard cite unconfirmed reports that Xhaka's car was pelted with coins as he left the Emirates on Sunday evening.

Fans on Twitter also claim to have witnessed the incident:

Exactly when that was is unclear. The Athletic suggest he may have actually left before the game had ended, but that's not to say plenty of Arsenal fans didn't head off early too.

That report also claims some senior players then visited him at his home because he was visibly distressed.

Tension is boiling in north London with Arsenal having won just six of their last 17 league games.

Should Xhaka be stripped of his duties, Emery has four other players as part of the leadership group he can turn to.

They are Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette...and Mesut Ozil. This feels like a new nadir.
