England rugby fan books flight to Tokyo whilst 'four or five pints down'

England v New Zealand - Rugby World Cup 2019: Semi-Final

An overzealous England fan has booked flights to Tokyo for the Rugby World Cup final while intoxicated.

Rob Lewis, 36, was “four or five pints down” when he came up with the idea of taking himself to Japan for the game.

Lewis - a web designer from Sunbury-on-Thames - had spent his morning watching the semi-final win over New Zealand with friends in the pub.

He now finds himself with no ticket to the match and nowhere to stay, but he does have a plane ticket.

Mr Lewis explained his decision, saying, as per the Evening Standard: “At 11 AM, the idea popped in my head to look at flights.”

He was successful in his quest; finding a ticket for £650 return that stops over in Paris with Air France.

The flight leaves on Tuesday, with the game happening on Saturday. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that Mr Lewis is currently on crutches.

“I had a knee operation just over a week ago, so I’m on crutches at the minute,” Mr Lewis revealed.

“I’m going to be hobbling around Tokyo on crutches trying to get a ticket to the final, which is pretty dumb but worth it for the adventure.”

It may prove slightly difficult for him with the cheapest tickets fetching over £1,000 on Viagogo and him probably facing stiff competition from other people who will be searching for the same tickets.

All direct flights to Tokyo from Britain are entirely booked, with all returns on Sunday or Monday taken also. However, that hasn’t deterred hundreds of other fans planning expensive trips to see a potential second World Cup win for Eddie Jones’ men.

England will play South Africa - in a repeat of the 2007 final - which they lost after they came through a tough semi-final against fellow Home Nation side Wales.

The contest will take place at the International Stadium Yokohama at 9 AM GMT (6 PM JST).
