Diego Maradona was given a hero’s welcome upon his return to Newell’s Old Boys.

The Argentinian legend, who played five times for Newell’s during the closing stages of his brilliant career, came back to manage his Gimnasia side at Estadio Marcelo Bielsa on Tuesday.

Newell’s fans turned up outside his hotel prior to the manage to serenade Maradona, who responded by dancing.

Newell’s, Lionel Messi’s childhood club, treated Maradona like a king. He was presented with a framed painting, a canvas artwork and a Newell’s shirt prior to kick-off.

And they even prepared a special throne for him to sit on during the match.

The throne was placed pitchside, allowing Maradona to watch on in comfort.

Meanwhile, the rest of Maradona’s staff took their seats in the dugout. Maradona’s too important for that.

The match went Gimnasia’s way, too. They recorded a 4-0 win, which is their biggest away win in over 23 years.

Broadcaster TNT Sports even had their own “Diego Cam” so that fans watching on TV could watch Maradona.

Unreal. He really was treated like a God.

The 1986 World Cup winner celebrates his birthday today (October 30) and it’s safe to say he had a great birthday.

Maradona’s career as a manager has been very interesting.

His CV is very underwhelming but he’s a captivating figure and no doubt earns respect in the dressing room.

One interesting superstition he introduced at Gimnasia was to ban the colour green, believing it to bring bad luck.

“A lot of players had to switch boots,” Gimnasia midfielder Victor Ayala explained to Radio Rivadavia, per The Athletic. “The vast majority had them in green.”

He carries lucky charms with him on matchdays and wanted shirt numbers 13 and 17 to be removed, but squad numbers in Argentina can only be changed at the end of the season.

Gimnasia are second-bottom in the Argentine Superliga but with Maradona in charge, it’s going to be a fun ride regardless of results.
