Kieran Tierney told Arsenal players to thank away fans after shootout defeat to Liverpool

Arsenal will be wondering how they didn’t progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after losing on penalties to Liverpool, following a 5-5 thriller at Anfield.

The home side may have taken a sixth-minute lead but weren’t ahead again in the tie until the penalty shootout.

The Gunners led 3-1, 4-2 and 5-4 during the 90 minutes but still somehow managed to throw it away.

Of course, neither Liverpool nor Arsenal were near full-strength but it could be argued that Unai Emery’s side had the stronger and more experienced squad on the night.

That much can be proved by comparing the substitutions the two sides made throughout the night.

Arsenal were able to bring on Matteo Guendouzi, Dani Ceballos and Kieran Tierney, whereas Liverpool introduced Curtis Jones and Pedro Chirivella.

But Arsenal’s experienced substitutes couldn’t turn the topsy-turvy match into their favour.

However, Tierney did earn praise from Arsenal fans who spotted his actions after their penalty shootout defeat.

The £25 million signing is still trying to get his Arsenal career up and running as he returns from injury. And the Scot came off the bench with seven minutes remaining as the Gunners tried to see out their 5-4 lead.

They couldn’t do that as Divock Origi’s injury-time equaliser forced penalties.

Then, Ceballos missed the only spot-kick as Klopp’s men reached the quarter-finals.

The Arsenal players must have been devastated the way they threw the tie away but Tierney made sure they didn’t head straight down the tunnel.

A video has emerged of Tierney’s reaction after Curtis Jones’ winning penalty.

Guendouzi, Ceballos and others start walking towards the touchline as Liverpool players celebrate but the left-back grabbed the team and made sure they went over to thank the travelling supporters.

It was something many Arsenal fans spotted and they thoroughly enjoyed. Check out the reaction on Twitter.

When Arsenal are perhaps lacking leadership from their actual captain - Granit Xhaka - they really need this kind of positive influence from Tierney.
