Liverpool are through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup after beating Arsenal on penalties at the end of a pulsating 5-5 draw.

The Reds have now won more shootouts than any other club in the competition's history.

Yet it's remarkable it came to that.

The Gunners had raced into a 3-1 lead with just minutes to go until the interval.

Harvey Elliott won a penalty by extremely dubious methods, converted by James Milner, but Ainsley Maitland-Niles then restored the visitors' two-goal advantage.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hit back with another stunning long-range goal, before Divock Origi's brace sandwiched Joe Willock's strike.

Origi loves a bit of late drama, his equaliser coming in the 94th minute.

You still with us?

The drama didn't end there as Liverpool's young side coolly finished all their penalties and Caoimhin Kelleher saved from Dani Ceballos.

Local lad Curtis Jones, who grew up in Toxteth, thumped home the decisive penalty.

A moment the 18-year-old will never forget, not least because it was filmed by none other than Roberto Firmino who was sitting in the stands.

"Go Curtis, lad!"

Martin Tyler, eat your heart out.

Firmino, like so many of Liverpool's regular first team, was rested as youngsters such as Neco Williams, Sepp van den Berg, and the ever-promising Rhian Brewster were given run-outs.

The average age of Klopp's starting XI was 22 - and that was with James Milner and Adam Lallana.

The overall squad had an average of just 21.

Jones is among the most exciting prospects of Liverpool's academy, The Independent suggesting he has even been compared to Sadio Mane by coaches.

Indeed, it's understandable that some Liverpool fans were a little sceptical as to whether Klopp was all that serious about progressing.

Whatever his motives, the future's looking very bright at Anfield.
