VAR has been a roaring success in the Premier League since its introduction, hasn't it...?

Well, not quite.

The Premier League decided that, for the first nine gameweeks, they would operate a ridiculously high threshold meaning VAR would very rarely overrule refereeing decisions.

After nine matches, we brought you how the Premier League table would look without VAR.

We did this by only taking into account the original refereeing decision and speculating the impact that decision would have on the outcome of the match.

*We know that the table isn't definitive. It's impossible to predict what would have happened if VAR hadn't got involved. It's arbitrary but we've tried our best to work out how matches would have panned out on each occasion*

That original decision may have been incorrect - which is why VAR intervened. But in our eyes, whatever decision the referee or assistant referee makes is all that matters because we're taking VAR completely out of the equation.

We're not interested in the *correct* decision. Just the decision that the on-field officials made.

Each week, we'll bring you an updated version of how the Premier League table would look without VAR. We'll look at each decision VAR has overruled from the previous gameweek and update the table accordingly.

In gameweek 10, it seemed as though the Premier League decided the threshold would go from ridiculously high to ridiculously low. Therefore, we saw VAR overturn a number of decisions that they wouldn't have done previously.

Let's take a look at how that affected the 'Premier League table without VAR:'

And here are the overturned incidents from gameweek 10:

NO OVERTURNED VAR DECISIONS IN GAMEWEEK 10

3rd | Chelsea | Points: 21 | Points difference: +1

Game: Burnley (A)

Incident: Referee Michael Oliver gives Chelsea a penalty after Callum Hudson-Odoi went down only for VAR to determine it was a dive.

Outcome without VAR (CHELSEA WIN): Chelsea were 4-0 up at the time. 4-0 up and a penalty to make it 5-0 with 13 minutes left, we’re pretty sure Frank Lampard’s side would have won the match.

4th | Arsenal | Points: 17 | Points difference: +1

Game: Crystal Palace (H)

Incident 1: Wilfried Zaha was booked for ‘dive’ when he went down under Calum Chambers’ challenge. However, VAR awarded the penalty to Palace and rescinded the yellow card.

Incident 2: Sokratis thought he had scored a late winner for Arsenal to make it 3-2. However, VAR spotted an Arsenal foul in the build-up which was missed by referee Martin Atkinson.

Outcome without VAR (ARSENAL WIN): Arsenal were 2-0 up when VAR awarded Palace a way back into the match. If that wasn’t enough, it then ruled out what appeared to be a late winner.

5th | West Ham | Points: 16 | Points difference: +3

6th | Wolves | Points: 16 | Points difference: +4

NO OVERTURNED VAR DECISIONS IN GAMEWEEK 10

7th | Leicester | Points: 15 | Points difference: -5

Game: Southampton (A)

Incident: While Ben Chilwell was celebrating putting Leicester 1-0 up, Ryan Bertrand was retrospectively sent off by VAR for a foul in the build-up.

Outcome without VAR (LEICESTER WIN): As mentioned, Leicester had already taken the lead when Bertrand was sent off. Without VAR, we wouldn’t have seen a 9-0 win for Leicester but we’re sure they still would have won the match.

8th | Sheffield United | Points: 14 | Points difference: +1

NO OVERTURNED VAR DECISIONS IN GAMEWEEK 10

9th | Man United | Points: 13 | Points difference: 0

Game: Norwich (A)

Incident 1: VAR awarded Man Ud a penalty for Ben Godfrey’s foul on Daniel James after Stuart Attwell had originally waved it away.

Incident 2: Fred’s shot was blocked by the arm of Todd Cantwell and, once again, VAR - not Attwell - decided it was a penalty.

Outcome without VAR (MAN UTD WIN): This is quite easy to work out by the fact United missed those two VAR awarded penalties. United eventually won the match comfortably 3-1.

10th | Burnley | Points: 13 | Points difference: +1

Game: Chelsea (H)

Incident: Referee Michael Oliver gives Chelsea a penalty after Callum Hudson-Odoi went down only for VAR to determine it was a dive.

Outcome without VAR (CHELSEA WIN): Chelsea were 4-0 up at the time. 4-0 up and a penalty to make it 5-0 with 13 minutes left, we’re pretty sure Frank Lampard’s side would have won the match.

11th | Everton | Points: 13 | Points difference: +3

Game: Brighton (A)

Incident: VAR spotted a foul by Michael Keane on Aaron Connolly which was missed by on-pitch referee Andy Madley.

Outcome without VAR (EVERTON WIN): Everton were leading 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining when VAR awarded Brighton a penalty. It completely changed the match and saw the Seagulls turn the match around and pick up all three points. But we can only assume that, if VAR hadn’t award Brighton that penalty, Everton would have seen out the remaining 10 minutes.
