Everton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham was overshadowed by the horrific injury to Andre Gomes.

In the 79th-minute, Son Heung-Min lunged in on Gomes and brought him down.

It resulted in Gomes catching his ankle in the turf and colliding with Serge Aurier on the floor.

It led to a sickening injury as the players and supporters looked on in disbelief.

Referee Martin Atkinson initially brandished a yellow card to Son but, after seeing the severity of Gomes’ injury, upgraded it to a red card.

The South Korean was already in tears after seeing Gomes’ leg and didn’t protest as he walked straight down the tunnel.

But did he really deserve the red card?

Replays suggest that he didn’t. Instead, it was just a really unfortunate clash.

So why didn’t VAR overrule Atkinson’s decision to send Son off?

Well, after the match, the Premier League confirmed that Son was dismissed for ‘endangering Andre Gomes' safety which happened 'as a consequence of his initial challenge.'

Son surely isn’t responsible for what happened to Gomes. After all, it wasn’t his tackle that did the damage.

It did seem harsh.

After the match, Dele Alli explained how Son was inconsolable in the dressing room after the match.

"Son is devastated and in tears. It’s not his fault. Son is one of nicest people you’ve ever met. He can’t even lift his head up, he’s crying so much,” Alli admitted.

We wish Gomes a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, we hope that Son also keeps his head up and realises he isn’t responsible for the terrible injury.
