Everton's 1-1 draw with Tottenham was overshadowed by a horrific injury to Andre Gomes. The Toffees took little joy from Cenk Tosun's 97th-minute equaliser following an incident which left their Portuguese midfielder with a fractured ankle.Replays suggested that, despite having made the initial challenge, Son Heung-min's sending off was incredibly harsh and almost certainly the result of the severity of Gomes' injury. Sky Sports were understandably cautious about showing replays, but photos circulated online appear to show the damage being done when Gomes made contact with Serge Aurier. The full-back came together with Gomes and his foot gave way underneath him - again, it was completely unintentional.

Within moments, Gomes was screaming in agony on the floor.

Both Son and Aurier were inconsolable. The South Korean was in floods of tears and the Ivorian could be seen praying as his opponent received urgent medical attention.

In a statement after the game, amid confusion as to why Son had been dismissed when there was seemingly very little contact, the Premier League said he had "endangered the safety" of another player.

That implies there would be little point in Tottenham appealing, even though Martin Atkinson initially only took a yellow card out of his pocket and then changed his mind.

Mauricio Pochettino might count himself lucky it was only one player sent off, too.

In the Daily Mail, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg writes that Aurier could have seen red as well.

"That is where the game is at now and, if they determine the injury would not have happened without Son’s foul, then the player should be sent off for serious foul play," Clattenburg states.

"It is important to remember, however, that 'intent' has been removed from the Laws as referees could not determine this or otherwise without asking the player. Now, the focus is on the consequence.

"But I think the injury was caused by a freak combination of Son’s challenge followed by Gomes’ foot planting in the turf and then the impact from Spurs defender Serge Aurier.

"That being the case, should Aurier have been sent off too? It was a very difficult situation for Atkinson."

It was indeed a very difficult situation for Atkinson to manage.

The referee could have consulted his pitchside monitor to get a better view of the incident but chose not to.

Gomes was deeply unfortunate to fall victim to such a freak accident.
