Following her incredible win against Greek boxer Christina Linardatou, Eddie Hearn has heaped praise on Ireland’s Katie Taylor.

“Katie Taylor has opened the doors for all women in sport and in boxing to come through and box at this level.

“It is not women’s boxing, it is not men’s boxing. It is boxing,” Hearn said following the enthralling match between the pair.

The win meant Taylor became a two-weight world champion as she landed the WBO super-lightweight title in her 140lbs debut. She became only the third Irish boxer to win world titles in two divisions.

The 33-year-old won the bout with a unanimous points win of 96-94 97-93 97-93. Speaking after the match, Taylor was reflective about her achievement.

“This is more than a dream, to headline a huge show like this, making history again, breaking boundaries again.

"We knew from the start that this was going to be a very, very tough fight, we said that Christina was the best 140 pounder in the division and we knew it was going to be a tough, tough task for 10 rounds.

“I’m a two-weight World Champion and the best is yet to come…I'm making history again," she said against a backdrop of huge Irish support at the match in Manchester.

Eddie Hearn also announced that the undercard of Taylor’s main event, Terri Harper, the English IBO super featherweight champion had secured another title fight next year following the successful defence of her own title.

Harper will contest the WBC super-featherweight title in a bout against Eva Wahlstrom of Finland next February. When making the announcement, Hearn credited Katie Taylor with opening up room for female boxers on the biggest boxing stages.

Hearn was not the only one to praise Taylor, however, with the likes of Connor McGregor calling her an inspiration and some labelling her the best Irish sportsperson of all time.
