Granit Xhaka has officially been stripped of the captaincy at Arsenal.

Unai Emery named the Swiss star as his captain at the end of September.

But he's lasted just over two months in the job.

Unai Emery has made the decision after Xhaka told Arsenal fans to 'f*** off' while being booed in a match against Crystal Palace last week.

Emery announced the news in his press conference on Tuesday evening.

"I had a meeting with him and told him he is no longer in the captain's group," Emery explained, per the Mirror.

"He accepted my decision. We need to carry on and focus on tomorrow's match.

"I needed to take a decision and now it's closed."

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was given the armband for his side's 1-1 draw against Wolves on the weekend and has now been confirmed as the club's new captain.

Hector Bellerin was in attendance when Emery announced the decision to the public.

And the Spanish right-back, who was in contention to replace Xhaka himself, stated that he respects his manager's decision.

"As I commented after the night of the game sometimes it’s hard to deal with feelings," he said, per football.london.

“He made a mistake. As a dressing room we have to be together. We back him. He has played his part.

“We respect the decision of the coach and the club. For us it’s to give him our love and care.”
