November 6, 2019 marks 33 years since Sir Alex Ferguson was appointed Manchester United manager. The Scot arrived from Aberdeen after leading the Dons to three Scottish Premier Division titles, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup.So he came with a rather impressive resume - although an 11th-placed finish in his first season in charge at Old Trafford left some unconvinced. But it wasn’t long before Ferguson got things right. He placed trust in Man United’s youth, acquired talents such as Eric Cantona and Roy Keane, and the trophies came pouring in.

By his retirement in 2013, Fergie had won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League twice.

He’s easily the greatest manager in Premier League history.

And his actions off the pitch, many of which went without attracting public attention, show just how classy a figure he is.

In 2018, former Leicester Mercury reporter Jeremy Clay shared an incredible story about Ferguson’s gesture towards Man United’s oldest season-ticket holder.

She was named Alice and she was in her 90s. She lived in Leicester and frequently came into the Mercury’s office to tell Jeremy to write more stories about United.

“But we’re a Leicester paper,” Jeremy would tell Alice, but she wouldn’t listen.

The two began chatting and Alice informed Jeremy that Ferguson would send a minibus to Leicester to pick her up and take her to all of United’s matches at Old Trafford.

That’s from Manchester to the East Midlands and back again. Every other weekend.

Ferguson’s heartwarming gestures didn’t end there.

When the United manager learned that Alice’s eyesight was failing - and that she had stopped going to Old Trafford as a result - he offered to pay for her to have an operation.

It’s a story that many fans won’t have ever heard.

Fergie could be a fiery manager when he needed to be but he represented Man United with class.
