Manchester United scouts were reportedly at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday to watch Marek Hamsik.

The Slovakia captain was in fine form as Napoli beat Roma 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Edison Cavani, which ended the Giallorossi's unbeaten run at home and kept Partenopei in the race for the Scudetto.

Hamsik is one of the hottest prospects in Europe and, as well as United, he has attracted interest from the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea - with the latter also posting scouts to Italy at the weekend, according to Il Mattino.

According to, Sir Alex Ferguson is rumoured to have identified the 23-year-old as a future Old Trafford star and United will return with a summer bid after missing out on him in January.

However, United will have to spend big to land their target after Napoli reportedly slapped a whopping £35 million price-tag on their playmaker.

According to the Mirror, the Old Trafford club will also reignite their interest in Aston Villa winger Ashley Young in the summer after initially having a bid rejected last month.

United are expected to become embroiled in a transfer battle with Liverpool in their pursuit of the 25-year-old, who has under 18 months left to run on his current deal at Villa Park.

The former Watford attacker has been linked with a move to Anfield for a number of months, with Liverpool director of strategy, Damien Comolli, admitting the club would be interested should Young come on the market.

However, Villa assistant manager Gary McAllister insists Gerard Houllier has been promised that he won't be losing any of his star names when the transfer window and the former Liverpool boss has identified Young as a player he is desperate to keep.
