Several former England players have been invited to Wembley for this weekend's friendly against Germany which is already sold out and could quite well become a record-breaking fixture.

The Football Association (FA) have plans to honour "as many former capped internationals as possible" at Wembley on Saturday, which would be biggest ever meeting of former Lionesses at one event.

Although yet to be announced which England stars will be in attendance, the majority of those rumoured to be honoured never had the opportunity to play at the new Wembley. The stadium opened in 2007 but England Women weren't given the chance to play there until seven years later in 2014.

It could be argued that these honours come far too long over-due, however, the announcement has been received well throughout fans and players.

Former-Lionesses goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis took to Twitter to express her excitement.

"Cannot wait to see so many old friends and for the FA showing recognition [to] all the women who gave a lifetime of commitment," the former-Evertonian keeper tweeted.

According to BBC Sport, those expected to be honoured include Southampton legend Sue Lopez and the team that she led in the early 1970s, through to current stars like Manchester United manager, Casey Stoney.

Saturday now proves to be an even more momentous occasion than first imagined. Not only is the game at Wembley already a sell-out, but the match comes just one week before the FA's first-ever Women's Football Weekend. Now, as we look to honour a vast selection of former players that paved the way, the next fortnight is a huge opportunity to truly celebrate the history of women's football in England.
